The National Register of Historic Places Ian Johnson, Oregon State Historic Preservation Office
What is the National Register of Historic Places? • The National Register is the nation’s official list of historic places worthy of preservation • Over 2,000 properties listed in Oregon, including 130 historic districts. • A National Register district is a concentration of properties united historically or aesthetically by plan or physical development
How can the National Register help communities? • Neighborhood recognition and stabilization • Consideration in planning for state and federally funded projects • Qualification for federal and state preservation tax benefits and grants • Building code leniency • Design review
. . . And how can it not? • Doesn’t mean that a building or neighborhood will be protected from time and change forever • Protection is only as strong as local historic preservation laws
National Register Process
Getting Listed: Best Practices • Make sure the National Register is the right tool • Listen, really listen • Plan, plan, plan, and then plan more • Take time for the process, but not too long! • Make sure the nomination is good, very good
