IB Application Process • October, 2010 – Submitted Application Part A • March, 2011 – IB consultant visit • April, 2011 – Submitted Application Part B • August, 2011 – Training of faculty to begin program completed • September, 2011 – 19 course outlines written and submitted • October, 2011 – Scheduled Authorization Site Visit • November, 2011 – IB Decision regarding Hauppauge acceptance

  4. What Is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program? A two-year program for students beginning in grade 11 who elect to • pursue this comprehensive credential A six-discipline integrated program that requires students to apply • learned skills IB program includes: Extended Essay , Theory of Knowledge, and • Creativity, Action, & Service Allows each student to design a program of study based on his/her • strengths Develops skills in all content areas •

  5. Core Curriculum (English) (Social Studies, (LOTE) Business) (Mathematics) (Science) (Music, Theater, Visual Arts, Film)

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) • TOK is a course which connects all areas of the IB curriculum model • The course centers around the philosophy of learning • Students learn how to question what they know in all areas of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical and historical) • The course promotes critical thinking and provides students with an awareness of themselves as thinkers

Extended Essay • In-depth independent research on a focused topic of student’s choice • Teaches students how to find, read, evaluate and write about research • Engages in all stages of the writing process: drafting, revising, editing, and final product (4000 words) • Prepares students for undergraduate writing across curriculum areas • Student works with mentor teacher during two year period

Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) • A program that balances the academic requirements with extra-curricular experiences • Encourages personal development in a variety of areas • Can be through the arts, sports, or community service • Develops self-awareness, empathy, and responsibility • Promotes capacity to work effectively with others

IB Student Assessments • Uses multiple forms of assessments – Internal assessments are teacher- developed and scored throughout the course of study – External assessments are IB developed and scored; normally at end of course of study • Enables and encourages student choice in performance-based assessments

The Diploma Program • Three Higher Level (HL) Courses • Three Standard Level (SL) Courses • Theory of Knowledge – Course that connects all areas of the IB curriculum model – Focuses on critical thinking and application of knowledge • Extended Essay – In-depth independent research on a focused topic of student’s choice; 4000 word essay completed during a 2 year period • Creativity, Action, Service – Encourages personal development in a variety of areas such as the arts, sports, or community service

Earning the Diploma • Each subject is graded on a point scale of 1 through 7 • An additional 3 points can be earned through TOK/Extended Essay • 45 maximum available points; 24 points are required to obtain an IB Diploma • Emphasizes achievement in a program of study over individual subject achievement

  12. Earning a Certificate • Each subject is graded on a scale of 1 through 7 • Adds to rigor of student transcript • Allows options in theater, business and film not currently afforded through AP

  13. College Recognition • The IB program is widely recognized by colleges and universities • Colleges and universities have individual policies regarding credit for IB and other courses

How Will Students/Parents Understand IB as an Option? • Student information sessions – fall of sophomore year • Students will be advised by counselors and the IB Coordinator when planning schedules • Parent information sessions will develop awareness of program to support students in self-select process • All students will have the option to enroll in the full IB Diploma Program or take individual IB courses

  18. IB Costs to Date • Training $ 50,446 • Materials 4,450 • Curriculum Writing 26,460 • IB Fees – Yr. 1 9,500 Yr. 2 9,500 Total Cost 2008-Present $100,356

Training $50,446 • Includes all expenses – Registration/travel/lodging/food/substitutes (when necessary) • Utilized Title II funding that MUST be used for professional development • 36 faculty members trained • Ongoing access to Online Curriculum Center • Ongoing consultant support • Promotes higher-order thinking beyond IB classrooms • Any certified teacher may serve as an IB leave replacement

  20. Materials $4,450 • Within existing budget • Curriculum guides and teaching materials for all IB teachers in all subject areas • Student materials – Resources – Assessment Exemplars

  22. Ongoing District Costs • Annual Fee: $10,000 • Training Anticipate availability of online training sessions (reduces costs) • Classroom Materials • Curriculum revisions • Mailing of exams Goal of electronic submission of assessments replacing traditional mailings within two years
