  4. DESCRIPTION OF ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS 1. DO NOTHING NO ACTIONS WOULD BE TAKEN LEAVING THE STRUCTURE IN A DETERIORATING CONDITION - EVENTUAL LOAD RESTRICTIONS AND CLOSURE 2. CONCRETE DECK REPLACEMENT - ON EXISTING GIRDERS COMPLETE DECK REPLACEMENT WITH REINFORCED CONCRETE DECK ON THE EXISTING GIRDERS MAINTAINING THE EXISTING CONFIGURATION OF THE STRUCTURE INCLUDING EXPANSION JOINTS. 3. SUPERSTRUCTURE REPLACEMENT AND CONVERSION TO SEMI-INTEGRAL ABUTMENT COMPLETE REMOVAL OF CONCRETE DECK, GIRDERS, CANTILEVER DECK AND PART OF THE BUTTRESSES MAINTAINING ONLY THE ABUTMENTS. THE ABUTMENTS WILL BE MODIFIED TO A SEMI-INTEGRAL TYPE. 4. REPLACE EXISTING STRUCTURE WITH CONCRETE BOWSTRING STRUCTURE COMPLETE REMOVAL OF CONCRETE DECK, GIRDERS, CANTILEVER DECK AND ABUTMENTS. PREFERRED ALTERNATIVE

  6. EVALUATION OF PROS AND CONS - STRUCTURE 2-F, ST. DAVID STEET ALTERNATIVE PROS CONS DO NOTHING - Low immediate cost - Does not address problem statement - Postpones major capital expenditure 1 - Eventual load restrictions and closure to Highway No. 6 - Retains design detail that is not acceptable by CONCRETE DECK REPLACEMENT ON - Nominal cost savings over alternative 3 today's standards for durability, safety and EXISTING GIRDERS maintenance 2 - Comparable cost to Alternative 3 - Unknown issues that may arise during construction SUPERSTRUCTURE REPLACEMENT AND - Semi-integral abutments enhance performance - Comparable cost to Alternative 2 - Provincially funded CONVERSION TO SEMI-INTEGRAL and durability of structure 3 ABUTMENT Provincial funding REPLACE EXISTING STRUCTURE WITH - Aesthetically pleasing - High cost - Additional time for construction CONCRETE BOWSTRING STRUCTURE - Narrower travel lanes on bridge to accommodate arches, alternatively widen/replace substructure 4 - Eliminates 1 sidewalk limiting pedestrian access - Visual issues from entrances close to bridge (diminished sight lines) - Higher maintenance cost and restricted access - No provincial funding PREFERRED ALTERNATIVE
