THE BASICS
- More than 270 of us will be attending the
REN Centenary Camp at KISC
- REN = Ruislip Eastcote Northwood District
Scouts
- KISC = Kandersteg International Scout Centre,
Switzerland
THE PARTICIPANTS
- All young persons aged below 14 - ‘Scouts’
- Most young persons 14 to 18 - ‘Explorer Scouts’
- Some Adults 18 to 25 – ‘Scout Network’
- All other Adults are acting in a support rôle to
the ‘Scouts’ and ‘Explorer Scouts’
THE LOCATION
- KISC is 1200 metres above sea level and is very
close to the village of Kandersteg
- It is situated in the Bernese Highlands which
are part of the Swiss Alps
- Mountain peaks surround Kandersteg and rise
high above KISC
- The scenery is Alpine and stunning
THE CLIMATE
- The high peaks can trap cloud in the valley
- The sun rises late and sets early
- Night time temperatures can approach
freezing
- KISC has its fair share of Good and Bad

How Your Kit Gets There (and Back)
- The week before camp
- Camping and Personal Equipment is delivered to
12th Ruislip Scout HQ, West End Road
- It is stored there until it is loaded into a 13m
articulated lorry
- The lorry drives to KISC and is met and unloaded by
the Advance party
How You Get There (and Back)
- We meet at Heathrow on Tuesday 29th July
- Getting to Heathrow will be the responsibility
- f the Camp Attendees and their parents
- Similarly, returning home from Heathrow is
Camp Attendees and parents responsibility
Documentation
- Each and every Attendee should have returned:-
- A Completed Personal Authorization and General
Information (PAGI) Form
- 3 Copies of their Passport and EHIC card
- These should have been checked and verified
by the Group Leader
Camp Fees
- Each person should have paid:-
- £50 Initial deposit
- 2 further stage payments of £110
- There remains to be paid:-
- By 28th April the 3rd Stage payment of £110
- By 30th June the 4th Stage payment:-
- £110 Scouts
- £160 Explorer Scouts
Fund Raising
- The first half of Fund Raising amount:-
- £25/Scout
- £50/Explorer
Should have been paid to REN by Groups
- The second half is due from Groups by
30th June
- The Subsidy is matched funding
Camp Bank
- For Scouts and Explorer Scouts
- Limit of £50 / person
- Must be paid in BEFORE 30th June
- Deposits made in pounds sterling
- Paid out in every other day in Swiss Francs
- Unused money returned in pounds via Groups

Getting to the Site
- Remember, you only have your Day-sack
- Bus from the station or walk along the road
Your Kit
- All your Personal kit and clothing will be sent
in advance
- Packed in a holdall, maximum size 90 litres
- Labelled as instructed (or you may never see it again)
- Delivered to your Group’s pick up point between
Monday 21st & Wednesday 23rd July, as instructed
- A KIT LIST MUST BE COMPLETED FOR CUSTOMS

The Menu
Meals Breakfast
Continental with meats and cheeses with bread. Eggs to be available some days

Packed lunches with cured meats and cheeses with bread and fruit

The only fully cooked meal of the day with Main course and Dessert
Supplies
- Food is supplied by KISC from requirements
given to them by the REN Catering team
- Food is then distributed by the team to the
individual Sub Camps
Cooking
All meals are prepared and cooked by the individual Sub-camps
Variations
- All dietary requirements, be they for religious
- r allergic needs, should by now have been
communicated to us on the PAGI form
- These needs will be taken care of within the
menu’s ingredients
Not Catered For
- Only specialist requirements are catered for
- If the food distributed is not liked there is no
- ther option
- We cannot just pop out to the supermarket to
get an alternative

Planning the Activities for Kandersteg
- December 2013 - Activity Preferences Submitted by all
individuals – that’s 270 Activities for 8 days = 2160 activity choices!
- January/February 2014 - Group and Camp
Programmes prepared from the 2160 choices
- 11pm 28th February 2014 - Request Submitted to KISC
Activities – What Next?
- Early April 2014 - Programme to be confirmed
by KISC.
- April/May 2014 - Programme confirmed to
Group Activity Co-ordinators who will feed back to individuals.
Activities – When we are There
- All Activities are run by experienced KISC leaders
qualified to UK Standards
- One of our leaders will accompany every activity –
although they may not be able to join in due to limited spaces
- The bunk houses/mountain huts that we have booked
for the moderate and easy overnight hikes will have exclusive use for our Young People
- Those booked through KISC for more challenging hikes
may share with other Scouts
Important Information to Keep You Safe and Make Sure you Enjoy Your Activities
- Kit Is VERY Important on Activities – if you do
not meet the kit requirements of KISC you will not be able to do the activity.
The Important Kit
- Hiking Boots – that fit and you have worn before
- Waterproofs – Jacket and Trousers
- Comfortable Trousers for walking – NO JEANS
- Gloves, Warm Hat, Sun Hat, Sun Cream
- Water Bottle – minimum capacity:-
- 1 litre for moderate and easy hikes
- 2 litres for challenging hikes
Dietary Requirements
- Dietary requirements have already been
collected on the PAGI Form
- It is essential that we are supplied with FULL
dietary requirement (not fads)
- There is NO facility for swapping or purchasing
food locally
Medical
- The REN camp’s Central Medical Team include
a Nurse and Paramedics
- Minor First Aid and Medication will be
handled at Sub-Camp Level
- Medical and Dietary “Discussion Desk”
available in the foyer after the meeting
Medication
- All Medication taken to camp must be:-
- In its original packaging
- With Dosage instructions
- Clearly labelled with the Recipient’s Name
- Medication will only be administered in
accordance with the Dosage instructions on the
- riginal packaging
- Unless alternate, written instructions from a qualified
medical practitioner are also supplied
Medical Information
- Up to date Medical Information is to be
returned by 13th June on the ‘Emergency Contact and Medical Information’ Form (ECMI)
- Parents/Carers contact details during the
camp are also required on this form
Phones & Electronic Gadgets
- Scouts are not allowed to take Mobile Phones,
I-Pads, Tablets, Electronic Games equipment or similar
- Explorer Scouts may take the above but must be
aware that there are little or NO charging facilities available to them
- Limited charging facilities are available for adults
Information
- Several weeks prior to departure a 20+ page
Information Booklet will be issued to everyone
- Please ENSURE all forms returned to us are
completed COMPLETELY and CORRECTLY
- All Under 18’s passports will be held by your
sub-camp’s leader
Personal Safety
- All persons 18 years and over will have current
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance
- Scouts and Explorer Scouts will be issued with
an Emergency Contact Card for use if they become lost
- KISC operate UK rules. Under 18s will not be
allowed to consume any alcohol
