Information Systems

What is really going on?

  • Macro trends
  • World is getting wealthier and expecting longer life
  • People are living longer
  • Still have quality and access issues
  • Everyone has the same problem – need improve quality and

reduce cost. Technology is non-partisan enabler. This is where HIMSS is focused.

  • US is world leader in medical treatment, research,

teaching, drug development. We have been focused on specific problems and individual aspirations.

  • HITECH/PACA is the result. Not perfect, but forcing

standards for EHRs and paying for health rather than procedure.

Information Systems

How does healthcare system integration affect CIOs and their teams?

  • The landscape (read payment system) affects all

physicians and hospitals

  • This imperative means CIOs are expected to:
  • Integrate physician practices and hospitals
  • Provide integrated EHRs, databases and registries
  • Cut costs
  • Protect security and privacy
  • A very tall order
  • Requires business focus and efficiency
  • Technical excellence and precision
  • Advocating for funding
  • Knowledgeable human capital

Information Systems

How do we link EHR systems?

  • Plenty of experts in the room who know much better than

me how to do this technically

  • There must be a business/clinical driver (really mostly

about money)

  • Interplanetary medical record
  • Technology is not the barrier
  • Payment system – reimbursement for health rather than

procedure/test

  • Privacy/security issues
  • “Magic button,” MassHIway, vendor integration solutions

Information Systems

How do we exchange healthcare information?

  • Not very well, inefficiently, focus on provider preferences

rather than the patient

  • Will sound like a Socialist, but the ACO concept really

means putting the patient first regardless of physician/hospital, then dividing the pot of gold

  • Means a change of mindset and practice. Some may

want to opt out.

  • Through Federal mandate and business case, we will

achieve NHIN

Information Systems

What technology solutions do healthcare organizations need to accomplish these goals?

  • Project Managers, process improvement specialists,

clinical workflow analysts, solid vendor relationships

  • Software engineers – although fewer than before,

security and privacy experts

  • Business savvy
