Travelling to Ieper (Ypres)

  • It is going to be a long journey, so it is important to bring a

sufficient quantity of food and drink, we will be making only short stops at service stations, so do not rely on buying supplies there.

  • Students are welcome to bring electronic devices to entertain

themselves on the journey. However, the safety of these items are the student’s responsibility.

  • Please note that students are allowed to use mobile phones

during the trip. However, students are expected to be respectful and not use their phones when we are at any of the visits. Phones are only to be used on the coach and at the

  • accommodation. Any student breaking this rule may have their

phone confiscated.

  • Please hand in your child’s passport and EHIC at the end of the

meeting.

Ieper Lodge

  • All students will be in multi-bedded rooms. Rooms will

be allocated a few days before departure. Every effort will be made to ensure that each student shares with at least one person of their choice, but this cannot be guaranteed.

  • Each room has a shower and WC.
  • Bedding is provided, but towels are not.
  • Breakfast will be provided at the accommodation on

Friday and Saturday. Dinner will be provided on Thursday and Friday. The accommodation will provide us with a packed lunch on Friday and Saturday.

  • Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the accommodation.

The In Flanders Fields Museum presents the story of the First World War in the West Flanders front region. It is located in the renovated Cloth Halls of Ypres, an important symbol of wartime hardship and later recovery.   • The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing is one of four

British and Commonwealth memorials to the missing in the battlefield area of the Ypres Salient in Belgian Flanders. The memorial bears the names of 54,389 officers and men from United Kingdom and Commonwealth Forces (except New Zealand and Newfoundland) who fell in the Ypres Salient before 16th August 1917 and who have no known grave.

  • Ever since 1928, the Last Post has been sounded under

the Menin Gate every evening at 8.00pm. The organisation

  • f this daily ceremony is the responsibility of the Last Post

Association.

  • The Last Post, traditionally the last salute to the fallen

warrior, is played in memory of the soldiers of the then British Empire and Allied Forces who fell in the Ypres Salient during the First World War.

  • The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme

battlefields bears the names of 72,194 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces.

  • These men died in the Somme battle sector before 20

March 1918 and have no known grave. The date of 20 March was the day before the German Army launched a large-scale offensive, codenamed “Operation Michael”, against the British Army Front in the sector

  • f the Somme.
  • Over 90 percent of those commemorated on the

Thiepval Memorial died in the 1916 Battles of the Somme between July and November 1916.

  • Tyne Cot Cemetery is the resting place of

11,954 soldiers of the Commonwealth

  • Forces. This is the largest number of

burials contained in any Commonwealth cemetery of either the First or Second World War. It is the largest Commonwealth military cemetery in the world.

  • The dates of death of the soldiers buried

at Tyne Cot cemetery cover a period of four years, from October 1914 to September 1918 inclusive.

is a Belgian museum devoted to the 1917 Battle of Passchendaele (also known as the Third Battle of Ypres), where in 1917 in only

historic château grounds of Zonnebeke and focuses on the material aspects of World War I.

  • The museum contains a replica dugout and

trenches, along with exhibits of uniforms, weaponry, etc.

Additional Information

  • A maximum of 65 Euros (£50) is recommended. All money and

belongings are the responsibility of the individual student.

  • All students must bring clothing for both warm and cold weather,

rain gear, sun cream and sturdy shoes or boots.

  • Please inform Miss Buck if you do not wish photographs to be

taken of your child.

  • It is likely that some students will not take to the food provided

by the accommodation. It is recommended that students bring a range of snacks with them, just in case.

  • A Facebook group will be set up so that parents/carers can see

the progress of the trip and get important messages. Details will be sent by text shortly.

  • If your child’s medical information or your contact details have

changed since you submitted the initial paperwork for the trip, please collect a new form from Miss Buck before you leave.
