Global Supply Chain (GSC) Program

▌ Established in 2009, Defence partners with the Primes to

promote and support Australian SMEs

Thales was the third prime to join in 2010 7 Primes now involved ▌ GSC Program Objectives To increase the number of Australian SMEs, winning work in the primes’ global supply chains and that of their major subcontractors To reduce industry’s reliance on Defence as its primary client To create a more globally competitive, cost conscious industry base Sustain Australian Industry for the long term by driving and supporting innovation

Australian Success Story – EM Solutions

▌Supply to Thales France & USA

Thales provides satellite terminals for Land, Sea and Air domains. EM Solutions are a market leader in Ka & X Band satellite electronics. 2011 – The Thales GSC Team introduced EM Solutions to Thales France. EM Solutions awarded 1M AUD contract to provide key parts for a military Satcom.

  • Since 2012 – EM Solutions products used widely in Thales Satcom systems;

embedded into Thales Supply Chain, with signing of framework agreement.

2017 – EM Solutions consulted as supplier to a commercial aviation connectivity programme for North America. This is a major programme for Thales, including the supply of a new satellite by Thales Alenia Space.

  • June 2018 – EM Solutions awarded first part of multi year contract.
  • The market for commercial aircraft connectivity is anticipated to double by 2030.
  • EM Solutions will accompany Thales in this important program.

Australian Success Story – Laserdyne

▌Supply to Thales Netherlands

Thales Netherlands (TNL) manufactures Mirador, a product used by Navies worldwide – this system includes a Laser Range Finder (LRF) The Thales GSC team introduced Laserdyne to Thales Netherlands. In competition with Thales’s own Laser products, Laserdyne selected to upgrade the Thales Mirador LRF capability After a 2 year process of design modification, testing, product qualification, certification and acceptance (all supported locally by the Thales GSC team), Laserdyne was awarded their first contract Laserdyne LRF’s are now embedded into Thales product range; they have already delivered their lasers to Thales and continue to receive repeat

Australian Success Story - Ferra

▌Partnership with Thales Germany

Thales Germany manufactures the PHOENICE tactical radar for submarines; this system is used by Navies worldwide. The GSC team briefed Thales project & senior management on the capabilities that exist in Australia and organised a process of consultation and evaluation. After an 18 month process, Ferra were selected to manufacture the key components consisting of the waterproof motor assembly and it’s below decks drive unit. This required Ferra to establish it’s own supply chain in Australia. June 2017 – Ferra were awarded their first contract for the manufacture of two sets of equipment for a Thales European customer. Since then they have started discussions

  • n further equipment sets for Europe and also an East Asian customer.

An updated version of this radar is being offered to the Sea 1000 programme.

Australian Success Story – AMOG and Matrix Composites

▌Submarine Signature Reduction

AMOG developed a concept for reducing lateral drag on drilling risers.

  • LGS – Longitudinally Grooved Suppression
  • Fairings manufactured by Matrix in WA.

Thales funds AMOG and Matrix to investigate if this technology can be applied to submarine masts to reduce signature and detection.

  • Includes scaled model testing at the Australian

Maritime College Future funding includes full scale lab trials and sea testing
