School Culture and Climate Initiative A Partnership of United Way of Northern New Jersey and the College of Saint Elizabeth
Overview:
- Provides schools with the means to improve
their culture, climate, and health
- Assists in producing an environment where
children can thrive academically, emotionally, and physically
- Increases the engagement of students,
families, and the community
- Rooted in the work of Dr. Maurice J. Elias
2016 - Present:
- Teachers, students and parents completed
survey
- Creation of Staff Core Team
○ Over 20 members incorporating various stakeholders in the building
- Creation of Student SEL Team (3 - 5)
- Review of strengths and opportunities
- Implementing initiatives based on survey
results
- Planning post survey for Spring 2019
Positive Discipline
- Rooted in the work of Dr. Jane Nelsen and Lynn Lott
- Five Criteria:
- Helps children feel a sense of belonging and connectedness
- Mutual respect and encouragement
- Effective long-term solutions

Purpose:
- To build student connections
among different grade levels
- To create opportunities to
include all students in a shared learning experience
What is it?
- Students were reorganized into “teams”
comprised of all students in grades K-5
- Teams will be meeting periodically
throughout the year to work on team building activities
- Lessons developed during MPS-SEL staff
