  5. Who?

  6. WHAT? • Concussion program • Concussion protocol acceptance and implementation • Data collection • Data review • Constant evaluation • Behavior modification

  7. WHEN? • Now • This is the accepted program for TAHA • By September 1 or prior to contact practices/scrimmages/games all affiliates must have implemented • Coach/Player education and familiarization • Assign a coordinator and support

  8. WHY?

  9. WHAT IS A CONCUSSION? • A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells. • Does not require unconsciousness (only ~10% experience this)

  10. CONCUSSION SIGNS OBSERVED • Can’t recall events prior to or after a hit or fall • Appears dazed or stunned • Forgets an instruction, is confused about an assignment or position, or is unsure of the game, score or opponent • Moves clumsily • Answers questions slowly • Loses consciousness • Shows mood, behavior or personality changes

  11. CONCUSSION SYMPTOMS REPORTED • Headache or “pressure” • Nausea or vomitting • Balance problems, dizziness or blurry/double vision • Bothered by light or noise • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy or groggy • Confusion or concentration/memory problems • “Just not feeling right,” or “feeling down”

  12. WHAT DO WE DO? • Remove the player from play- “When in doubt, sit them out” • Get medical attention (err on the side of caution) • Inform and educate players and parents • Report information to TAHA Player Safety Coordinator using appropriate forms redacted for name and day/month of DOB (leave birth year)

  13. WHY AREN’T TEAMS COMPLYING? • Rhetorical question, but the answers are many and varied… • Keep focus- compromising a player’s brain health is NOT worth the next shift, game, tournament or season. • Encourage players to communicate symptoms • Our goal is to keep players playing to their potential as effectively as possible.
