Agenda and Overview.

slide-3
SLIDE 3
  • Statistics Canada’s IO Tables represent the most detailed

accounting of the Canadian economy available

  • The IO Tables show how much of each commodity is

consumed by industry, and how each industry consumes inputs.

  • The IO Tables thus allow the user to trace value chains

through the economy, and see what fraction of an industry’s inputs are being produced by the Canadian economy and what share must be imported.

Introduction.

slide-4
SLIDE 4
  • The production of a good can always be separated from its

subsequent sale or resale.

  • Output is production that can be sold, added to inventories,
  • r consumed or exported.
  • Supply is made up of domestic output plus imports.
  • Prices can be measured two ways: basic prices (as

produced) or purchaser prices (plus taxes and shipping charges).

Key Concepts.

  • Primary Inputs
  • Amount paid to labour, capital, and government.
  • Final uses
  • Goods and services not consumed or used as inputs to further

production.

  • Can be classified into four uses:
  • Final consumption expenditure: goods and services consumed by

individuals (ex: food, hockey) or the community (ex: health care, education)

  • Gross fixed capital formation: acquisitions of assets (ex: buildings,

machinery and equipment)

  • Change in inventories
  • Exports
