  1. INTRODUCTION TO INPUT-OUTPUT TABLES Statistics Canada’s Supply and Use Tables and their use in examining value chains Matthew Stewart Associate Director, Economics, The Conference Board of Canada Partner: Project Executed by:

  2. Agenda and Overview. 1. Introduction 2. Overview of Input-Output (IO) Tables ➢ Supply Table ➢ Use Table 3. Uses of IO Tables

  3. Introduction. • Statistics Canada’s IO Tables represent the most detailed accounting of the Canadian economy available • The IO Tables show how much of each commodity is consumed by industry, and how each industry consumes inputs. • The IO Tables thus allow the user to trace value chains through the economy, and see what fraction of an industry’s inputs are being produced by the Canadian economy and what share must be imported.

  4. Key Concepts. • The production of a good can always be separated from its subsequent sale or resale. • Output is production that can be sold, added to inventories, or consumed or exported. • Supply is made up of domestic output plus imports. • Prices can be measured two ways: basic prices (as produced) or purchaser prices (plus taxes and shipping charges).
