Sustainable Urban Health (SUH) Looking at health and sustainability (as in SDGs) in an urban perspective Program “City of the future” by Berg foundation (D) fosters novel co-operation of disciplines and sectors. 2 key points: • Credibility requires that health promotion / protection / care is pursued sustainably • An integrated view is meant to strengthen the www.urban-health.de position of “health” and “sustainability” when competing for attention in urban development. 2 [19_08] Building bridges – Sustainable Urban Health in Hamburg

SUH Hamburg case study Hamburg, 1.8 mill pop, city-state: • Model exercise 2016: outlining the idea of such a comprehensive account (sci-paper) • Book 2018: 70 chapters, 100 authors, incl. his- HiaP topics covered tory, health status, governance, health care, in the book: Consu- mer protection, Econ- rehabilitation, prevention/promotion, Health in omy, Education, Train- ing, Environment, Mo- all Policies , integrative community projects bility, Research, Social issues, Integration,Su- • A venerable NGO (from 1765) established a stainability, Urban dev- elopement, Work incl. Conclusions Catch-up needs (in Hamburg and elsewhere): more focus on sustainability; systems level interaction & quality assurance; securing “collective memory” SUH = a moderate- cost, “no regrets” approach which can cooperatively be applied anywhere, informing professionals & civic society Wanted : Experiences from similar approaches in other cities/areas – as a basis for comparative an- alysis and mutual learning. 5 [19_08] Building bridges – Sustainable Urban Health in Hamburg
