Sustainable Urban Health (SUH)

Looking at health and sustainability (as in SDGs) in an urban perspective Program “City of the future” by Berg foundation (D) fosters novel co-operation of disciplines and sectors. 2 key points:

  • Credibility requires that health promotion /

protection / care is pursued sustainably

  • An integrated view is meant to strengthen the

position of “health” and “sustainability” when competing for attention in urban development.

Selected Results

Strenghtening bridges across disciplines and soci- etal sectors is feasible, incl. co-writing, debate The (relative) defragmentation helps to see health- related activities as part of urban culture Debate now proceeds from “city” to “region” Sources of encouragement:

  • Link-up with comprehensive reports 1797ff
  • 2018 Hamburg book shortlisted by a jury
  • Survey responses > 50%
  • Recognition of SUH as cross-cutting issue for

urban future-proofing.

Conclusions

Catch-up needs (in Hamburg and elsewhere): more focus on sustainability; systems level interaction & quality assurance; securing “collective memory” SUH = a moderate-cost, “no regrets” approach which can cooperatively be applied anywhere, informing professionals & civic society Wanted: Experiences from similar approaches in

  • ther cities/areas – as a basis for comparative an-

alysis and mutual learning.
