  2. Consultation February 2015 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 2 of 16 Wellhead Protection Areas • WHPA-A: a 100 m radius around a municipal well • WHPA-B: the area where water can flow to the well in 2 years • WHPA-C: the area where water can flow to the well in 5 years • WHPA-D: the area where water can flow to the well is less than 25 years and not within WHPAs A, B or C

  3. Consultation February 2015 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 4 of 16 WHPA-E • WHPA-Es can only apply to GUDI wells – GUDI is groundwater under the direct influence of surface water • WHPA-E is the 2-hour time-of-travel (ToT) within the surface water body that influences the well

  4. Consultation February 2015 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 5 of 16 WHPA-E • WHPA-Es have been delineated for the following wellheads: – Tobermory (MNBP) – Oliphant, Amabel-Sauble, Huron Woods, Foreman, Shallow Lake, Pottawatomi, Tara, Chatsworth, Walter’s Falls and Kimberley (GSCA) – Chepstow, Hanover, Lake Rosalind, Markdale, Neustadt and Durham (SVCA)

  5. Consultation February 2015 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 6 of 16 WHPA-E Delineation • Identification of a point within a surface water body where interaction with the groundwater aquifer is most likely: – If the point is within a small water body and water from anywhere in the water body can reach the point in less than 2 hours during any two-year runoff event, the WHPA-E includes the entire water body – If the point is within a large water body, the delineation of the WHPA- E requires other variables, such as the streamflow velocity to delineate the two-hour ToT

  6. Consultation February 2015 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 7 of 16 WHPA-E Delineation • From this point, the 2-hour ToT must be delineated • For all streams that are within the 2-hour ToT, the 120-metre setback, Conservation Authority regulation limits and further transport pathways (e.g. agricultural tile drainage) were added

  7. Consultation February 2015 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 9 of 16 WHPA-E Redelination (2014) • Most WHPA-E delineations encompass the entire waterbody, but six are on larger watercourses. They are; – Amabel-Sauble, Tara, Chatsworth, Walter’s Falls, Chepstow and Durham • These six were chosen for redelineation

  8. Consultation February 2015 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 10 of 16 WHPA-E Redelination (2014) • Why redelineate? – Updated stream network – Updated elevation model (terrain) – Used new software to find more accurate stream velocities – Updated regulated areas from CA – Assumed all fields were tile drained

  9. Consultation February 2015 11 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 11 of 16 Methodology • Created 1 m DEMs using SOCET GXP (Grey Sauble’s new 3D software) with SWOOP 2010 data OLD NEW

  10. Consultation February 2015 12 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 12 of 16 Methodology • Collected stream cross-section information from the DEM by drawing profiles in 3D Stereo viewing – Representative cross-section for each unique stream section

  11. Consultation February 2015 13 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 13 of 16 Methodology • Used Conveyance Estimation System (CES) Software to model stream velocities • Inputs – Cross-Section Data – Roughness (used previous fieldwork images) – Slope (calculated using elevation values from new DEM) • Output – Graph of average velocity (m/s) with change in elevation – Use the velocity at bank-full

  12. Consultation February 2015 14 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 14 of 16 Methodology • Apply representative velocities to stream segments and calculate upstream to 2-hr ToT

  13. Consultation February 2015 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 17 of 16 WHPA-E Threats • Activities within properties located within the WHPA-E may be considered a threat to the drinking water source • WHPA-E threats; – Application of ASM, NASM and grazing – Storage (permanent and temporary) of ASM, NASM and outdoor livestock yards • Policies will apply

  14. Consultation February 2015 Sa Saugeen en, Gr Grey ey Sa Sauble, Nor orth ther ern Bru Bruce e Pen Peninsula Sou Source e Prote Protecti tion Reg Regio ion Slide 18 of 16 WHPA-F • If the water quality of the well shows contamination that cannot be attributed to WHPA A-D or the surface water in the vicinity (WHPA-E), a larger contributing area may be delineated (WHPA-F) • No WHPA-F has been delineated for this region
