Supporting Success

Teachers and leaders at the academy have created a package of support for students. These packages have been designed with several key considerations:

  • It is only one aspect of GCSE support – without exception how a student applies themselves to learning in

lessons; homework and their independent revision, is by far the biggest influencing factor in terms of success.

  • It is based on experience and what we know is effective in terms of supporting students’ success.
  • It is a personalised package that will look different for every student depending upon their different needs. If

your child has been invited to something then we have invited them because we believe it will make a

  • difference. Similarly, if they have not been invited don’t panic – it’s because we believe it is not necessary

and other activities might be better for them.

slide-13

Definition of a habit

‘A settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up’

slide-14

Ha Habi bits ts

Habits are difficult to form but can be even more difficult to break. In fact research shows, that once a habit is established it will stay in your brain forever – whether you choose to follow the habit or not.

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Get thinking…

A recent study has identified that on average every British adult has 4 bad habits. What do you think the researchers found to be the top 5 bad habits of British adults?

slide-16
SLIDE 16

  • 1. Swearing
  • 2. Picking your nose
  • 3. Not listening when someone is speaking to you
  • 4. Biting your nails

Changing habits

The Cue – this is the signal that tells the brain to begin the habit loop. The Craving – this is the process the brain goes through as it seeks a reward. The routine – these are the series of activities/behaviours, either positive or negative the we enter into to gain the reward. The reward – this satisfies the craving created by the initial cue.

Things to think about when choosing a course/subject and provider?

  • What interests them about the subject?
  • Are they good at the subject?
  • Will they get the entry requirements eg Maths A Level, they will need a grade 6 or above
  • Where do they want to study? Sixth Form or a college

  • How long will it take to travel to?

This also applies if they are thinking about apprenticeships!

slide-31
SLIDE 31

Personal Statement

  • The Personal Statement is the most important part of the

application form and the chance for the young person to ‘sell themselves’

  • The guide has been added to the Ossett Academy website under

the “Curriculum” tab heading, then “Careers”

  • If the guide is followed step by step and each question is

answered this will formulate the ‘Personal Statement’
