Stormwater BMP Maintenance Background and Definitions Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection What is Stormwater Runoff? Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection Stormwater Stormwater is the result of precipitation that flows

  1. Stormwater BMP Maintenance Background and Definitions Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  2. What is Stormwater Runoff? Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  3. Stormwater • Stormwater is the result of precipitation that flows overland to streams and other bodies of water • Stormwater collects pollutants as the water flows overland • Stormwater is typically not treated • The amount of runoff is increased by hard, impervious, or compacted surfaces Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  4. Convincing Property Owners to “Buy Into” Stormwater Inspection & Maintenance Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  5. Do you like to… Fish Swim Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  6. Had you rather swim in This Or This Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  7. Had you rather fish in… This Or This Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  8. Is water related recreation important to North Carolina? Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  9. Is there a connotation to clean water in our culture? Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  10. Tourism and Water ??? Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  11. Where does your drinking water come from? Does it come from here? Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  12. Is Flooding a Serious Issue in North Carolina? Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  13. Is erosion a serious issue in North Carolina? Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  14. What’s the difference? Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  15. The difference is… Storm sewers lead to… Streams Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  16. The difference is… Sanitary sewers lead to… Waste water treatment plants Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  17. Watersheds and Land Use • Watershed is that geographic area that drains into a stream or river • Watershed = catchment = drainage area • Urbanization of watersheds increases stormwater flows Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  18. Managing Stormwater • Stormwater is directly related to land use – ‘generally, the more the land is used (developed) the more stormwater will be generated’ • Best Management Practices (BMPs) are installed to treat, slow, and reduce stormwater runoff Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  19. Stormwater Management vs. ‘Drainage’ • Agriculture and Engineering have emphasized drainage for centuries – get the water off-site ASAP • Stormwater management is fundamentally different… from previous slide: • “Best Management Practices (BMPs) are installed to treat, slow , and reduce stormwater runoff” Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  20. Best Management Practice/ SCM • Structural, vegetative, or management practices used to protect and improve our surface and groundwater • The new term for this is “Stormwater Control Measures” (or SCMs) Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  21. Stormwater Control Measures • Also known as ‘BMPs’ • SCMs are expensive to design and install so they should be maintained to: • 1. LOOK GOOD • 2. FUNCTION PROPERLY • 3. BE SAFE Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  22. Please be aware…. • All BMPs need maintenance • We will show many examples of BMPs that need maintenance • BMPs that are well maintained should have a life span of 30+ years • We are learning as we go, designs have improved, construction has improved, maintenance has improved…. Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  23. Why Are We Here? Cary Stormwater BMPs 2008 • Approximately 425 BMPs in Cary • According to one of Cary’s inspectors: Timothy Grady, RLA: • 95% of BMPs fail initial inspection as they require repairs • Most repairs are maintenance related: erosion, trash removal, tree removal Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  24. Why Are We Here? Cary Stormwater BMPs 2010 • Approximately 600 BMPs in Cary • Cary has digital tracking system for BMPs • Strong educational program for contractors, has 2 inspectors • Must pass initial inspection to get C/O • ~ 95% pass first annual inspection now Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  25. BMP Water Quality Credits Neuse and Tar River Basins N P • Wet pond 25 40 • Wetland 40 40 • Bioretention 40 45 • Grass Swale 20 20 • Veg Strip w/LS 20 35 • 50’ rip buff w/LS 30 30 • Permeable Pavements 40-60* 40-60* * Coastal Plain & Sandhills Only Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  38. Sand Filter Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  39. Manufactured BMP Systems Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  40. Pollutants Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  41. Pollutants • Nitrogen • Phosphorus – From atmosphere (car – Associated with exhaust, etc.) sediment – From fertilizer – 1/3 soluble, 2/3 insoluble in water – Water soluble – Feeds algal blooms – Feeds algal blooms – Contaminates shallow groundwater Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  42. Pollutants • Total Suspended • Heavy Metals Solids – Lead, zinc, cadmium – A.K.A. sediment – Sources: cars, truck, industrial processes – # 1 water pollution problem in NC Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection

  43. Pollutants • Hydrocarbons • Bacteria – Oil, gas, grease, etc. – Specified as fecal from cars/trucks coliform – Pest waste one source – Dumpsters, diapers, etc. Stormwater BMP Maintenance & Inspection
