WHAT IS GRAZING BMP?

The Grazing BMP program is a voluntary, industry led process to assist graziers to identify improved practices that enhance the long term profitability of their enterprise. It helps identify the steps required to incorporate best management practices into their enterprise. In time it will allow the grazing industry to demonstrate sound environmental and ethical practices to consumers and community.

2007 - 2009: Framework for Grazing BMP developed by Industry. 2009 - 2012: Program and Partnership developed between QLD DAF, FBA and AgForce. 2012 – 2014: Pilot funded and delivered for Fitzroy and Burdekin catchments (Reef water quality focus) 2015 – 2017: Pilot expanded to include SEQ Catchments and Burnett Mary Catchments (BMRG). Project working with Northern Co-operative Meat Company (NCMC) to deliver Grazing BMP to producers in Northern NSW. AgForce delivered GBMP workshops in the North and West of QLD. 2016 -2017: Grazing BMP delivered in Western Queensland as part of the Drought and Climate Adaptation program (DCAP 1). Sheep modules

  • developed. This project will now continue til 2021 under DCAP2.

2017 – 2020: Phase 3 expansion of BMP. Goal to have standards recognised as the environmental and ethical benchmark to underpin grazing ‘green’ claims.

SELF ASSESSMENT DELIVERED VIA

  • Group workshops
  • Facilitated One on

One completion

  • Self-actuated on-

line Workshop and One on One self- assessments are a facilitated process that seeks to foster group discussion, learning and establish or enhance professional networks. Ability to generate action plans including identification of information gaps, training and enhanced production opportunities

ACCREDITATION

  • Graziers can nominate themselves to undertake a 3rd party

independent audit. SGS currently conduct audits.

  • Graziers are at Industry or above Industry standard on self

assessment.

  • Audit for accreditation looks at 54 standards from self

assessment.

  • Market driver to producers?
  • Risk profile reduction.

  • 39% of graziers in original

pilot areas are actively engaged in the program.

  • 27 million ha plus across

Queensland.

  • Supported by industry

and government as the

preferred mechanism to assist industry to meet legislative and community reporting expectations

  • Over 1800 businesses

engaged to date

  • 93 enterprises have gone

through the accreditation process

  • Accreditation is fully

supported by an independent third party accreditation system that meets ISO19011 standards

  • Linking extensive industry BMP’s into one portfolio for data sharing.
  • Development of the tool to cover more detail on Carbon and Climate

with stand alone modules.

  • Framework of Grazing BMP set up for the ability to expand across

Australia.

  • Greater linkages to industry tools – MLA products, Government

programs etc.

  • BMP to be used as the vehicle for industry to adopt continual

improvement.

  • Development of resources underneath the “tool” to assist producer
