  2. September 2018 St John’s Walworth Presentation Policy Purpose The purpose of this policy is to ensure a consistently high standard of presentation across the whole school which all children and staff recognise, understand and follow. Aims For children: • To motivate children to present their work to the highest possible standard, increasing their pride in their learning • To enable children to recognise work that is presented to a high standard • To ensure children know what is expected of them in presenting their work For staff: • To create consistency in presentation across the school • To provide a baseline for judging acceptable standards of presentation • To ensure progression in presentation standards as children move up the school Provision • Handwriting and presentation rules must be taught to children as a whole class activity at the beginning of the year, supplemented by handwriting lessons at least twice a week in KS1 and at least once a week in KS2 • Staff must act as role models at all times using the ‘Letter-join’ handwriting scheme in all writing that is on view to children, e.g. on the flipchart, the smart board, in marking • The ‘Letter-join’ handwriting alphabet and child-friendly ‘Presentation Rules’ must be displayed in every classroom and referred to as often as necessary • Children with specific learning needs will have these addressed in co-ordination with the SENCO using appropriate support, e.g. pencil grips, access to laptop with Clicker General Guidance Layout • All work must be clearly labelled with date and Learning Objective, both of which must be underlined. - The long date should be used for English, and the short date for Mathematics and Science - Mathematics worksheets should be edited to include the date and L.O. at the top • Worksheets going in books must be trimmed and stuck in neatly • Worksheets and Learning Objectives should be typed in ‘Letter-join’ fonts • Any pictures drawn by children or photos stuck in should have captions/explanations • In A4 exercise books, if there is more than half a page left blank the next day’s work should continue on the same page, with a line ruled off and a new L.O. and 2

  3. date to indicate the new day. If there is less than half a page left blank , or A5 exercise books, the next day’s work should always continue on the next blank page. Mistakes • Mistakes should be crossed out with one horizontal ruler line (a word or more) or a single diagonal line (one letter) - This line should always be in pencil • Rubbers should be available for children to use only when appropriate – e.g. in Art or work for display – but should not be used for any other writing. Equipment • Children will write in pencil until the end of Year 3 • Children will begin to write in blue handwriting pen from the beginning of Year 4 onwards only when they have earned a pen licence • In Year 1-3, child editing will be done in blue handwriting pens; in Years 4-6 it will be done in purple pen • Any colouring in workbooks should be done in colouring pencil. Felt pens should not be used in work books Other • All work must be marked using the agreed marking policy • The standard of handwriting should naturally be more relaxed during ‘drafting’, especially in final writing outcomes where children may be writing quickly. This is fine, as long as there is sufficient evidence of high-quality handwriting from the child, particularly in work for display • All books should be labelled with the child’s full name, subject and year group, then covered in a plastic jacket Key Stage One Layout • Children will write in pencil • All work will be labelled with date and L.O. on sticker in ‘Letter-join’ font, plus Success Criteria when appropriate • Worksheets and LO stickers should be stuck in by an adult in Year 1 and by a child as soon as appropriate in Year 2 Mathematics • One digit in each square • Any lines should be drawn with a ruler • Children should begin to draw margins when appropriate. These should be one box wide and drawn with a single ruler line • Calculations should be presented in accordance with the Calculations Policy 3

  4. Key Stage Two Layout • Children will write in pencil until Year 4, when they will begin using a blue handwriting pen (subject to earning a pen licence) • All work will be labelled with date and LO, plus Success Criteria at teacher’s discretion • Children will write their own LO, plus Success Criteria at teacher’s discretion • Children will write their own LOs in Year 5 and 6 • New paragraphs should be shown by skipping a line and indenting with two finger spaces • Subheadings should be underlined using a ruler • All ruled lines (including for mistakes, titles and diagrams) should be drawn with pencil • When drafting longer pieces of work, children should write on every other line to enable later editing Mathematics • Margins should be two boxes wide and drawn with a ruler on the left hand side of the page, then again in the centre of the page when necessary to provide two columns • Question numbers should be written inside the margin with brackets • One digit in each square • Any lines should be drawn with a ruler • Calculations should be presented in accordance with the Calculation Policy Marking Coloured ‘Presentation Stars’ should be placed in the margin next to the Learning Objective when children have followed all presentation rules and worked particularly hard with their presentation; these should be frequently pointed out and celebrated to motivate all children in a class. Classroom Resources Children should have easy access to all appropriate equipment to enable them to present their work correctly. This includes pencils, rulers, books, handwriting pens, editing pens, colouring pencils, scissors and glue. Monitoring Presentation and handwriting will be monitored regularly by SLT and the English and Mathematics Lead through ‘book looks’ and lesson observations. 4
