New Jersey Student Learning Assessment – Science (NJSLA-Science)

The NJSLA-Science:  Is a federally required state assessment administered to students in grades 5, 8, and 11;  Provides a snapshot of student performance on the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Science (NJSLS-Science);  Was developed in collaboration with NJ educators, the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE), and New Jersey’s contracted science vendors;  Is significantly different from the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJ ASK) because NJSLS-Science are more rigorous standards and NJSLA-Science focuses on the application of science knowledge and skills rather than memorization of content. In addition, the cut scores for proficiency were set significantly higher than the NJ ASK.

 The Argument Driven Inquiry (ADI) instructional model that we have rolled out at the HS focuses on NJSLA instruction with an emphasis on the Science and Engineering Practices. Our HS Students performed within 2-5% of the state averages in the Investigating, Sense making, and Critiquing Practices.  Our Hispanic or Latino students performed above the state average at the HS level in that subgroup.  Our Black or African American students performed above the state level at the 5 th and 8th grade level in that subgroup.

Hackensack Public School’s Notable Achievements

 Re-evaluate curriculum for NJSLA standards alignment and Science and Engineering Practices implementation.  Continue with the Argument Driven Inquiry model of instruction at the High School level as the High School students performed well in the Science and Engineering Practices. We will also pilot the program at the Middle School.  Monitor student growth using NJSLA aligned assessments throughout the year and provide extra help for students who need extra support.  Provide teachers with more time to plan together at the Middle School

  • level. Curriculum and assessment cannot be analyzed without adequate

time for teachers to meet.  Provide extensive professional development for teachers on the NJSLA standards, assessment, and intervention strategies
