ARINAGATA Cooperative is a Gayo Arabica Coffee producer and exporter specializing in organic coffee. The cooperative has 2,582 selected coffee farmers covering 39 Villages in Aceh Tengah district of Aceh Province,

  • Indonesia. The cooperative was founded in 2006 and has an average

production capacity of 130 containers per year. ORANG UTAN Coffee Project. The Orang Utan Coffee Project supports coffee farmers to manage their plantations in an ecological and sustainable way to ensure the protection of the rainforest, the natural habitat of the endangered Sumatra orangutans. The coffee sold under this project supports the Sumatra Orang Utan Conservation Programme and protects the last ecosystem where

  • rangutans, rhinos, elephants and tigers still live together in the Leuser national
  • forest. The project works with 300 Gayo Arabica coffee farmers in Aceh Tengah

and Bener Meriah district in Aceh Province, Indonesia.

REDELONG ORGANIC Cooperative (REO) was created by a group of dedicated and experienced Gayo Arabica Coffee farmers in 2014 in the community of Kenawat Redelong. This community is in the Gayo Highlands of Aceh Province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The REO Cooperative has 703 members from four villages in the Bener Meriah District of the Gayo Highlands, with a total production area of 560 hectares. KOKOWAGAYO or also called Koperasi Kopi Wanita Gayo is women-

  • wned and women-managed Gayo Arabica Coffee cooperative

founded in 2014. The cooperative focuses on the processing and trading of organic coffee. The cooperative works with 567 farmers from 7 Villages located in the Bener Meriah sub-district in Aceh Province, Indonesia

  • PT. MEUKAT KOMUDITI GAYO is a Gayo Arabica Coffee trading company

founded in 2013 in Aceh Tengah district, in the Province of Aceh, Indonesia. The company’s primary businesses are in coffee processing, local trading and exporting. The company also holds license from Indonesia’s Ministry of Tradeto conduct coffee auctions. In 2009, the Gayo Arabica Coffee Protection Society (MPKG) was established as an organization that supports: 1. Legal protection for Kopi Arabika Gayo (Gayo Arabica Coffee) and maintains the quality and taste of Kopi Arabika

  • Gayo. Its establishment was fully supported by relevant parties, especially by

local governments of the Aceh Tengah, Bener Meriah, and Gayo Lues districts, Aceh Province, Sumatera Island – Indonesia, 2. Applications for Geographical Indication protection for Kopi Arabika Gayo and to obtain as much benefit as possible for the people of the Gayo Highland, especially those whose livelihoods depend on coffee, for example in maintaining the quality and distinctiveness of “Kopi Arabika Gayo”.

TPSA SME – Coffee Market in Canada

  • The coffee market in Canada is closely connected with

US Awho imports huge amount of Arabica coffee from Indonesia, including Gayo. This creates opportunity for Gayo Arabica coffee

  • The Canadian buyers are interested in traceability and

farmers direct supply. Almost all coffee produced in Gayo is from small holders famers and cooperatives.

  • Gayo has legal Geographical Indication
  • Buyer mission arrangement is one of the best approach

to facilitate coffee promotion, trading, relation and building trust

  • Demand for Specialty Coffee has increased in Canada,

Gayo and Indonesia in general can grab this opportunity

Lesson learned

  • Opportunity to present and discuss your coffee to the

potential buyers is crucial

  • Cupping session shall be well prepared and organized,
  • n time and invite potential buyers. Special cupping on

call or requests shall be prepared as well.

  • Follow up after expo in a must
  • Improve the promotional items such as web and social

media

  • Skills improvement in English, presentation and

negotiation skills are beneficial

  • Be clear about your quality and availability
  • Adding Geographical Indication to ensure origin and

traceability
