  1. SENIOR ADVANCED DESIGN PROJECT Cooling humidifier umbrella for lung cancer and multiple sclerosis patients Presented by Christopher R Aitken, Christopher J Barry, Jaime Martinez Diaz, Jason J Schwarzwalder, Yizhe Wang, Yunke Chen 1

  2. The problem Approximately 300,000 people are living with multiple sclerosis in the US [1] ● Approximately 500,000 people that are currently living have been diagnosed at ● some point in their life with lung cancer in the US [2] ● These diseases cause breathing ailments that can dictate people's lives 2

  3. User’s requirements Easy to use ● Sample user interface ○ The external water tank shall be easily refillable ○ Keep the user cool underneath ● ○ The device shall shade an area with lowered temperature to 65-70 °F. The device shall provide humidified air within 30% - 60% relative humidity for the user. ○ ● Implement Solar panels Within a safe transmission voltage. ○ Light weight ● ○ Around 1.5 lb. 3

  4. Existing patents Sun-rain umbrella with humidifier [3] All parts at the base of the umbrella Ultrasonic transducer to create vapor Fan pushes vapor up the shaft and out the nozzle under the canopy Bulky base – not easily portable CN103892540A 4

  5. Existing patents Umbrella with humidification function[4] Ultrasonic atomizer to create vapor Humidifier snaps onto the umbrella to be placed where desired An infrared remote as well as power switch used to turn humidifier on/off CN202819897U 5

  6. Existing patents Bionic leaf humidifying sunshade umbrella[5] Ultrasonic humidifier to create vapor Double layered canopy material serves as UV protection Small humidifier CN201709596U 6

  7. The solution An umbrella that has a built in humidifier ● A water tank that will store the water for the user ● ● A cooling system that could incorporate a fan to use evaporative cooling A microcontroller that will be able to automatically regulate humidity ● Solar panels with a back up battery to power the umbrella ● 7

  8. Cooling System Evaporative Cooling[6]: ● Heat from skin evaporates the sweat lowering the average kinetic energy on skin ● Lower kinetic energy reduces the temperature ● Effectiveness can be increased using a fan Swamp Cooler: ● Reduces the temperature by increasing the relative humidity ● Typical used in high temperature and low humidity ● Operation: ○ Evaporative pad is used as a median to evaporate the water ○ Water distribution keeps evaporative pad damp ○ Fan pulls in hot air and exhaust cooler air into environment Reflective Material[7]: ● Preventing heat absorption from the canopy of the umbrella ● Aluminum or a space blanket is able to reflect UV-rays and prevent heat absorption 8 due to its reflective index

  9. Cooling System Cooling Projection: [7 ] ● Psychrometric chart: a visual representation of how relative humidity affects the temperature ● Based on the wet and dry bulb, temperature may be adjusted by increasing the relative humidity ● Maximum usage Temperature: ○ 96 ℉ at 50% relative humidity 9

  14. Data Receiving and System Control Raspberry Pi Zero [18] ● Designed to be user friendly with a vast amount of tutorials online ● Prebuilt onto a PCB, only soldering required for components MSP430 [19] ● Lower power consumption with multiple low power modes Power Pins Price Clock Speed RAM ● Cheaper but requires a PCB to be built ● Low amount of RAM could become an issue Max Voltage Current Idle (A) Active (A) Watts (W) (V) (mA) (MHz) (B) Raspberry Pi Zero 0.1 0.35 1.75 3.3 16 $5 1000 512 M MSP430 0.5 u 230 u 0.22 m 1.8-3.6 2 $2 16 256/512 14

  15. Humidity and Temperature Detection AM2302 [20] A bigger version of the DHT22 that has an external casing ● ● Already has the bridge resistor built into the sensor Power Range DHT22 [20] Active Idle Voltage Temperature (mA) (uA) (V) Price Size (mm) (°C) Humidity Accuracy Bigger and more precise version of the DHT11 ● ● Is usable within more ranges of temperature and humidity DHT22 1 40 3-5 $8.00 14 x 18 x 5.5 -40 to 80 0-100 ±(2-5) than the DHT11 AM2302 1 40 3-5 $9.99 27 x 59 x 13.5 -40 to 80 0-100 ±(2-5) DHT11 [21] DHT11 0.5 100 3-5 $5 12.6 x 5.83 x 16 0 to 50 20-90 ±5 Least precise sensor but also costs the least ● ● Will use less power while active but consumes slight more while idle 15

  16. Power System How they work: Silicon material composed of several photovoltaic cells Photons from the sun’s rays hit photovoltaic cells, exciting the electrons, knocking them free of their atoms 16
