Betartron tunes of nonlinear integrable accelerator maps (see http://arxiv.org/abs/1910.08630 for more details) Sergei NAGAITSEV (Fermilab/UChicago) Tim Zolkin (Fermilab) Sep 30, 2019
Betatron tunes • The first mention of the betatron frequency was in the 1941 work by Kerst and Serber: – D. W. Kerst and R. Serber, Phys. Rev. 60, 53 (1941). • The theory of the alternating-gradient (AG) synchrotron [2] demonstrated the existence of an integral of motion (the so- called Courant-Snyder invariant) for particles in an AG synchrotron and established a connection between the modern AG focusing systems and linear symplectic maps, thus connecting the betatron frequency and the Poincare rotation number [3]. – E. D. Courant and H. S. Snyder, Annals of physics 3, 1 (1958). – H. Poincare, Journal de mathematiques pures et appliquees 4e serie 1, 167 (1885).

Betatron frequencies (approx. methods) • For a nonlinear mapping, we do not know (in general), how to determine the rotation number analytically. • Approximate methods: – Direct calculation from Poincare formula (2D cases) – Frequency Map Analysis (numerical method) – Normal Form Analysis (a perturbation method) • If the Hamiltonian function is known and it is time- independent: H(p, q) = E , then the oscillation period: 5 S. Our study • Suppose that the 2D map is integrable (it has an integral of motion, K ): • How can we determine the rotation number from this integral, K , and the map itself 6 S. Nagaitsev | NAPAC 2019 09/06/2019

4D maps? • We have also developed a method to calculate exact betatron frequencies for an integrable 4D McMillan map • This map is useful for electron lenses. 16 S. Nagaitsev | NAPAC 2019 09/06/2019

Summary • We now have a general and exact method to determine a Poincare rotation number (betatron frequency) for symplectic integrable maps. • We have a path to a new type of perturbation method, based on approximate integrals of motion and the map itself. 19 S. Nagaitsev | NAPAC 2019 09/06/2019
