RESPs (Startsmart program)

  • 30 minute phone meeting that explains Registered Education

Savings plans to parents

  • Canada Learning Bond $500, plus $100 each year until child is

15 years old ($500 + $1500= $2000)

Financial Institutions (Banks or Credit Unions) Group Plan Providers

Investment You control the Investment with the help from the bank or can place they money into savings under the RESP Group Plan Provider controls the investment Fees $0 or small fees High fees Plans Two plans to choose from

  • Family plan (more than one of your kids)
  • Individual plan (one kid only)

Group Plan (with many other Canadian kids who are not in your family.) Contributions Don’t have to put in your own money, but you can if you want. MUST put in your own money regularly. If you do not put money in regularly, you can lose most of the money.

  • Canada Education Savings Grant: 20% match for all Canadians

(on the first $2500)

  • An extra 20% match for people from low-income households

(under $46,605) on the first $500 per year

  • An extra 10% match for people earning between $46,605 and

$93 208 on the first $500 per year

Youth Fair Gains

  • Ages 16-24 may apply, combines Financial literacy and savings

together

  • Learn: budgeting, banking, credit, consumerism and assets
  • Earn: Save up to $50/month, matched up to $200/month.
  • Total savings $450, total matched savings $1800. 450+1800=

  • Used for post-secondary education (books & courses), tools for

work (trades, realtor, etc).

Award Selection Process

  • All applications are individually reviewed
  • Applicants who do not meet the award criteria are

disqualified

  • Shortlists are created and forwarded to donors or

committee for final selection

  • Student Awards Committee typically meets in August to

select recipients

  • Recipients typically contacted & provided with

paperwork/award information within a couple of weeks
