All-in-one solution for substation timing

GPS to PTP and IRIG B serving both legacy and new

Ethernet enabled IED/RTU

IRIG B to PTP converter, reuse already instelled GPS

receiver and provide PTP to new Ethernet enabled IED/RTU

IRIG B extender + PTP converter: extend already used

IRIG B code optical or electrical bus providing also PTP interface for new Ethernet enabled IED/RTU

  • Adding legacy IED/RTU to new PTP enabled substation:

PTP vs IRIG B

  • IRIG B is a serial time code TTL (00x) or modulated on 1 kHz carrier (12x)

which use a separate network cabling for the sole purpose of timing

  • Over coax (deasy-chain with impedance restrictions)
  • Over fiber (point-to-point)
  • PTP/IEEE1588
  • Uses Ethernet protocol as transport network – date and timing can be mixed on

same network cabling

  • Ethernet is a naturally multipoint /broadcasting network
  • Accuracy in the range of nanoseconds
  • IEC61850 also define Ethernet as communication network within electrical

installations

  • PTP reduces HW cost in Grandmaster clock as well as IED/RTU

Conclusions

PTP allows to use a single communication network

(Ethernet based) for both data and timing within the substation and reduces cost for both GM clock and IED/RTUs

SB-V01 has multiple inputs and outputs actng as:

IRIG B to PTP converter for adding new IED/RTU to legacy IRIG B

substations

PTP to IRIG B converter for adding legacy IED/RTU to new PTP

enabled substation

IRIG B extender using optical In/Outin daisy-chain and connecting

new enabled PTP/IED/RTU at any point in the IRIG B bus

Grandmaster Clock when GNSS module is equipped
