  3. Test Format and Timing: 3 hours (+ 50 min.)

  4. Reading Test ● Basics: read passages & interpret info. graphics to answer multiple-choice questions. ● Types of passages: 1 literary, 1 government, 1 science, 1 social science (some passages are paired) ● Skills tested: locate a piece of information or an idea stated directly, make inferences, analyze use of evidence, analyze word choice, use context clues, examine hypotheses, interpret data, consider implications. ● Not required: math skills or specific background knowledge.

  5. Writing & Language ● Basics: read, find mistakes and weaknesses, and fix them. All questions are multiple choice & based on passages and/or info. graphics. ● To answer some questions, you’ll need to look closely at a single sentence. Others require reading the entire piece and interpreting a graphic. ● Skills measured: improve the way passages develop information and ideas w/ evidence; enhance concision, precision, or style through word choice; make “editorial decisions”; make changes to enhance structure; fix convention errors.

  6. Math ● Basics: mostly multiple-choice, some grid-ins, 1 section w/ calculator, 1 w/o. ● Some parts of the test include several questions about a single scenario. ● Topics: algebra (linear equations & systems), problem-solving & data analysis, manipulation of complex equations, some geometry & trig. ● Skills tested: fluency, conceptual understanding, applications.

  7. Overarching Features ● Find the meanings of words in context ● Interpret, synthesize, and use evidence found in a wide range of sources ● Problems grounded in real-world contexts ● U.S. Founding Documents and the Great Global Conversation

  8. Tips The questions are usually easier at the beginning of a set. Answer the easier questions first. Mark questions you have skipped in your booklet. Eliminate “wrong” answers. Look for the best answer. Guess: Don’t leave any blanks.

  9. Tips Skim the reading passages. Use line numbers to find answers. Look for key question terms: “however”; “still”; except.” Look for correctness and clarity for grammar answers. Memorize common math formulas.

Structure of Rhetorical Analysis ● Include a clear and direct thesis statement for your introduction ● Main focus should be on body paragraphs and answering the prompt ○ Identify their argument and discuss how it is put together. Do not take a position. ○ The author uses specific diction , tone , and syntax in their essay. Analyze these to help you explain how they have constructed their argument. ● The more evidence you use, the better your analysis! Can you support your claim with evidence? Can you explain why that evidence is relevant to your claim?
