Review of Load Management Options

  • Options currently available
  • Load Management on generator
  • Load Management kit
  • Load Management on generator
  • Built into controller on air-cooled generators
  • Liquid cooled generators need additional features (not covered here)
  • Load Management kit
  • Accessory that can be used independent of generator

SLIDE 9

9

Load Management on generator

  • Built into controller on air-cooled generators
  • Can control up to 4 circuits/load
  • Connections are hard wired into harness
  • Each connection – 12v (0.25A) signal
  • Can control thermostats, relays, etc.
  • Priority is determined by connections
  • Load #1 = TB-1, Load #2 = TB-2,…
  • Smart system

SLIDE 10

10

Load Management on generator

  • How it works
  • When genset starts up, all managed loads are dropped
  • After 3 minutes, Load #1 is added if the amperage is running at < 80% rated
  • The controller stores the increase in amperage
  • After 3 minutes, load #2 is added if the amperage is below 95%
  • The controller stores the increase in amperage
  • After 3 minutes, etc…

slide-11
SLIDE 11

11

Load Management on generator

  • How it’s Smart
  • The controller will not add a load if it knows that load will cause the genset to go above 95%
  • If additional uncontrolled load causes the amperage to go above 95%, the controlled loads will

be dropped (one by one) until it gets below 95% again

Load Management on generator

  • Benefits
  • Build into generator
  • Does not need extra boxes or anything added into the ATS
  • Controlled by generator controller
  • Allows for smaller generator to be used
  • Don’t need to be able to start all loads at once
  • Code compliance with smaller generator
  • Amperage base response, not frequency
  • Smart system – adapting to the amperage needed and available

13

Load Management kit

  • The kit is an accessory
  • Can work with just about any controller, ATS, power source, etc.
  • Each box contains 2 relays
  • Each relay can be configured a number of ways
  • 1x 240vac load @ 50A
  • 2x 120vac loads with a total amperage < 50A
  • Can control fans (finance/AC), heat pumps, etc.
  • Each relay is Normally Closed
  • Only draws power when open
