Castranova school is one of the ancient schools in the country in Dolj department, being built

  4. before 1813 and representing an important element in the monographs of the village. That`s why the school played an important role in the progress of the village from the cultural point of view. The school was built by the General Cacalețeanu, near his house in order to lead it better, after his return from Russia. At Cacaleți, the old name of Castranova village (due to the name of the general), in 1865 a fire caused by the pupils, destroyed the school, so after a long period of lack of a school there was built in the village another school in 1874/1875. Those days the school started at 15 th September and finished at 15 th June as last year. But until 1884 the scholar year was split in semesters as in the present and after that date in trimesters as until 1997. At each end of the year, pupils of each class had to pass exams at all the subjects. The marks were from 0 to 10, 0 representing both the absence from school and the student`s interest in learning. In 1906, in the village was built the bank <Castra Nova>, a society which could assure to the peasants the money they needed. In this process an important role had the master Tuțescu. So the bank pursued its role. This master managed to buy with the money of the bank, Constantin Sârbulescu' possession to set up another building for the school just in the middle of the village. Later was bought the place just in front of the mayoralty in order to set up the kindergarten, but the building was constructed only in 1924. 3.The Structure of the school: The Castranova School is compound of two schools: the main school – the centre of Castranova village II. the V-VIII classes building the primary cycle building in CASTRANOVA village - and another school -the structure of Puturi village. The I-VIII classes building the kindergardent buiding in PUTURI village. In each of the schools there is functioning a kindergarten with more groups ( with 3-4 year children-the little group, 5-6 year -the intermediate group or the pre-scholar group). In the

  5. kindergarten of Castranova, there are almost 68 children and in that of Puturi – 72 children. Besides the kindergarten, each school contains a primary cycle, with pupils between 6/7 years and 10/11 years age. There are specific classes of study of each year of study: the 1 st year, the 2 nd year, the third and fourth one. However, at Castranova until last year there were two series of classes (A and B) starting from the 1 st year. Nowadays, children `s number becomes smaller because of less births and so we have less pupils at school. The primary cycle is frequented by 93 pupils at Castranova and 70 pupils at Puturi. At the secondary cycle ( that we call <gimnazial>) are pupils with 10/11 years age till 14/15 years. This cycle, also contains four classes of study. The secondary school level from Castranova is frequented by 126 pupils (1 class for the Vth, 1 for the VIth, 1 for the VIIth and 1 for the VIIIth). At Puturi, there are 64 pupils who go to the secondary cycle/level (there is also only one class for each of the four classes from V to VIII).So, in all the classes there are almost 450 pupils. The school has 5 buildings, 3 situated in Castranova (the kindergarten, the primary cycle and the secondary cycle) and 2 situated in Puturi (Kindergarten and the I-VIIIth classes). The school benefices of qualified teachers which are permanently interested in their children` s instruction, trying to assure them the basic didactic-material needs to correspond to their particularity of age. 4.
