Changes for Scientific Linux 6

  • ext4 now default file system.
  • upstart replaced SysVinit (allows service management and

event-driven initialisation).

  • yum update is now a cron job, not a service.

Expectations for Scientific Linux 7

  • Fedora 12, 13 → Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.
  • Fedora 18 → Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.
  • Fedora 15:
  • systemd as a replacement for SysVinit and upstart.
  • service [service] [option] replaced with

systemctl [option] [service].service

  • Fedora 16:
  • grub2 (can no longer just edit grub).
  • GPT partition tables by default instead of msdos.
  • boundary between system and user accounts moved from 500

to 1000.

  • Fedora 17:
  • chrony as default instead of ntpd.
  • move bin, sbin, lib and lib64 to /usr.
  • /tmp mounted as tmpfs by default.
  • Fedora 18:
  • firewalld to replace iptables
  • secure boot
  • New installer (warning)

Expectations for Scientific Linux 7: Desktop

  • GNOME 3 replaces GNOME 2 (Desktop Environment).
  • GNOME 3 comes with GNOME-Shell as (User Interface).
  • Also have Cinnamon as a UI instead of GNOME-Shell on

Fedora.

  • Ubuntu have Unity, not expected on Fedora.
  • MATE is a fork of GNOME 2, this will be added to fedora.
  • Also have KDE, Xfce, and Sugar (OLPC).
