SHORECREST OVERVIEW

  • Located in northeastern section of City of Miami
  • Very low elevations
  • Extremely vulnerable to flooding (tidal, storm

surge, rain events)

  • Mainly low-to-moderate income
  • Single family homes; low income apartment

buildings; some higher end homes on the Bay

  • Generally older building stock

WHY THE FLOODING?

  • Any roadway below elevation 3.75’ NGVD

currently at risk for tidal flooding

  • Several areas in neighborhood especially on

south side at much lower elevations

  • Old drainage system – no backflow valves, no

pumps

  • No/little living shorelines
  • Sea level rise!

SLIDE 9

SEA LEVEL RISE

  • SLR exacerbates

tidal and rain flooding events.

  • Frequency of

flooding events is increasing.

  • Potential

catastrophic situation with storm surge

  • ccurring at high

tides!

KING TIDE IMPACTS

  • Damage to property and vehicles
  • Immobility of many residents (esp. lower

income)

  • Further compromising of aging infrastructure
  • Hidden hazards in flood waters
  • Potential disruption of critical services and

systems

  • Discharge into Biscayne Bay

POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS

  • Near, mid and long term solutions needed
  • Upgrades to drainage system
  • Raising Roads?
  • Upgrade hard infrastructure, pumps, sea

walls?

  • Retrofit homes?
  • Natural systems and green infrastructure with

co-benefits?

URGENCY

  • For many the impacts of

Climate Change are incremental and are seen more as future concerns.

  • For Shorecrest the

situation is clear, present and urgent.
