Why motivation and self-efficacy? In weight management and physical activity:

High self-efficacy (SE) associated with successful adherence to dietary changes & weight maintenance and other addictive and lifestyle behaviour changes

(Dennis & Goldberg, 1996; Dutton, Martin, Rhode, & Brantley, 2004; Linde, Rothman, Baldwin, & Jeffery, 2006; DePue, Clark, Ruggiero, Medeiros, & Pera, 1995; Elfhag & Rössner, 2005)

…associated with expending more calories through exercise (King et al., 2010) …mediates effects of interventions on behaviour change (Darker, French, Eves, & Sniehotta, 2010) Motivation predicts long-term weight loss (Elfhag & Rössner 2005; Silva et al., 2011; Teixeira et al., 2004) …predicts dietary regulation/physical activity in 12-month weight loss trial (Mata et al., 2009) …predicts engagement with and success on a very low calorie weight loss programme over 23 months…

(Williams et al., 1996)

…and weight loss outcomes over three years (Silva et al., 2011) WHY MOTIVATION AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN BEING ABLE TO ACHIEVE A CERTAIN GOAL (SELF-EFFICACY)?

WHY MOTIVATION?: INFORMATION ALONE DOES NOT CHANGE BEHAVIOUR!

7 focus group discussions - thematic analysis: All groups raised the issue of wanting motivational support for losing weight and helping to maintaining weight loss. Help with behavioural elements, setting, reviewing goals. Disliked fitness/diet apps that required constant self-monitoring/calorie counting. Nutritional advise was never requested/in focus!

WHAT ELSE HAPPENS WHEN WE ADDRESS MOTIVATION FOR WEIGHT LOSS?

‘I will use this for other areas of my life where I am struggling; to get me out of this black hole I have been in recently…’ ‘And because it is all positive my depressed mood has really improved over the past months.’ ‘It is all about changing one’s mind set – isn’t it? I feel so positive and motivated because I never looked at it like this before….’ ‘I don’t know if you hypnotised me or what you have done, but the positive reinforcement, it really makes me feel good about being in this for the long-haul. I enjoy the path and I am not deprived like when I was on all these diets before…’
