Parenting a Middle School child- Potential for Greatness

What to Expect

  • Unpredictable- Tween

Who’s going to show up? Sweet or Snarly; Elation to Sadness

  • Separation-

Crucial development process of building their own identity apart from their parents. May look like rebellion, defiance and rejection but it serves a greater purpose in their development.

  • Confusion

Brains begin massive structural changes; concrete thinking makes way for more hypothetical thinking

  • Outside influences-Social world bursts

wide open Friendships change Social media Risk Taking- Brain not fully developed Your experience-awkward and painful middle school years?

Tips

  • Treat your middle schooler like a cat

The less attention you pay to a cat the more they come around. If you are too much into their world, they will pull away. They will come around more if you seem less interested.

  • Master the botox brow

Research shows that the part of the brain we use to read facial expressions isn’t properly functioning for a middle schooler. As a result they often mistake a wrinkled brow, whether out of curiosity, shock or just interest as anger. Keep a smooth brow.

  • Ask questions instead of giving advice.

“You have to turn our homework in or you will fail!” vs “What will happen if you don’t turn in your homework?”

  • Partner with teachers, counselors and

administrators at KMS Today.Com Michelle Icard 8/2016

Accelerated/Pre-AP/GT Classes

  • Accelerated/Pre-AP/GT classes are offered at

the middle school to help students gain the “Edge” in college preparation by:

  • Getting a head start on college level work
  • Improving writing skills and problem-solving

techniques

  • Developing study habits necessary for

handling rigorous course work

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Pre-AP/GT vs. Academic Level

Pre-AP/GT

  • More in-depth, application of grade level and

extension-style homework.

  • Requires more effort, attention, and skill
  • Student must be able to work independently in & outside

the classroom.

  • The student is highly self-motivated to learn and achieve.
  • Class discussions begin with the assumption that

knowledge has been acquired independently and moves quickly to concepts.

  • Testing involves more indirect application and drawing

conclusion-style questioning.

Academic Level

  • More grade level, skills-based, comprehension-style

homework.

  • The student may require more guidance from the teacher.
  • The student may need monitoring to ensure completion of

assignments.

  • Class discussions begin with a review of knowledge and

move carefully toward understanding concepts.

  • Testing involves more demonstration of skills and

knowledge-style questioning.

Advisory class

  • Advisory-mandatory full-year course required

for each middle school student.

  • If a student is in AVID, an intervention course

such as Reading Styles, Math Quest or Dyslexia, their advisory components will be embedded in those classes. This allows those students to participate in the elective choices available to all 7th graders.

slide-27
SLIDE 27

In 7th OR 8th grade all students are required to take a year of a Physical Education Course. It is recommended that you take your required PE course in 7th grade. If you do not take a physical education/athletics course in 7th grade, you are required to take one in 8th grade. As a next step, you will need to select a combination of full year electives and/or semester electives to complete your course request.

Finally, you will need to select at least 2 alternate choices for electives. You need to choose electives that you would be happy to have if your first choice isn’t possible. It is possible that these alternates COULD be the elective courses that you receive. Please note that if electives requiring applications are chosen, the application deadline of February 17th still applies. Please select at least 2 alternate electives. If no alternates are selected, they will be chosen for you!

SAVE Committee Process

Every effort is made to “SAVE” a student’s schedule

฀ April 28th ends the opportunity for a course

฀ A student who does not submit a course

request change before April 28th will not be eligible for a schedule change.

฀ A student who does not submit a course

Are you placed correctly? Is the Accelerated/Pre-AP or Pre-AP GT level the correct level for you? Please choose carefully! After March 27th, no changes to course requests will be allowed (including level changes). Students must remain in Accelerated/Pre-AP or Pre-AP GT courses through the end of the 2nd week of school and have the opportunity to request a level change until the end of the 12th week of school. To request a SAVE Committee, you must have: 1. Turned in all assignments. 2. Attended multiple tutorials. 3. Retested when needed. Then, you will fill out a SAVE form in the Counseling Center. A parent/teacher/student conference is required PRIOR to turning in a SAVE form. Turning in a SAVE form is not an automatic level change. Most likely you will have a meeting with your parents, teacher, AP, and counselor to determine correct placement for this subject.
