  1. REGIONAL MEETING ON HARMONIS ATION AS TANA, KAZAKHS TAN 20-21 DECEMBER 2017 D.P Pande Asian Institute of Transport Development ( AITD), INDIA

  2. Minutes of Last Meeting had 3 catch phrases  Advanced Information S ystems.  Risk Management.  Non-Intrusive Inspection. 2

  3. The 2 S tudies have been detailed  Covering Criticalities and Best Practices.  Efforts have started showing results.  Inter-country movements have started. However 3 areas need greater focus 3

  4. Area 1  Prioritizing options  Examine whether weightage can be assigned to various activities.  This will improve monitoring. 4

  5. Area 2  Introduce Human Interface  There will be need to set up an organizational structure.  This will be in 2 areas: (1) Inter – Country Regional Organization to be set up.  UTLC is a success  S uch establishments need to be encouraged 5

  6.  Human Interface Contd… etting up of a Nodal Agency for liability and risk mitigation (2) S  Let us learn from the T .I.R. Convention in the Road S ector.  It also gives comfort to Rail and Non-Rail Players. 6

  7.  In setting up both Regional Organization (like UTLC & Nodal Agency (aka Road S ector) AITD can assist  Member Railways  ES CAP S ecretariat  Freight Forwarder  Logistic Players  Customers 7

  8. Area 3  Latest Developments  Lessons from India – Bangladesh Railways.  Road Railer for Break-of-Gauge and Door-to-Door. New Innovation Video 8

  9. Summing Up  Prioritize Activities.  Two S tructured Organizations.  Examine New Developments. 9

  10. Thank you

  11. RoadRailer : An innovative bi-modal concept 1

  12. 2 RoadRailer Unit in Road Mode RoadRailer Unit in Rail Mode RoadRailer Concept

  13. RoadRailer Concept End Adaptor Bogie (EAB) Middle Adaptor Bogie (MAB) RoadRailer Bogies 3

  14. 4 RoadRailer Concept

  15. RoadRailer Concept An innovative bi-modal transportation technology wherein a “RoadRailer Unit (RRU)” operates as a  “ Semi-Trailer” on Road mode and  “Wagon” on Rail mode when coupled with bogies RoadRailer technology provides  Seamless door to door service by integrating speed & efficiency of rail with flexibility of road 5

  16. RoadRailer – For Cross Border Transportation Adaptation for Transportation of goods by rail across countries having different gauges of rail track by – • Design and develop RoadRailer Unit as per common standard specification suitable for cross border movement for movement of goods. • Design or adapt rail bogies suitable for RoadRailer Operations on a specific gauge. Adapter design to be universal across all types of bogie to facilitate coupling with RoadRailer Unit. • Wherever feasible identify interchange rail terminals where rail gauge changes. Here RoadRailer Units can be decoupled from one set of bogies of rake and coupled to another set of bogies to form a rake for onward journey. 6

  17. • Where rail terminals having different rail gauges are at a distance, there, after decoupling individual RoadRailer units can be driven across with the help of Prime Movers to the next terminal for rake formation for onward journey. RoadRailer technology thus can be deployed for seamless door to door transport of goods across countries by rail which is a safe, faster, economical and environment friendly mode of transport. 7

  18. Technological Features  Bi-modal vehicle with articulated design  Slack-less coupling  Marginal gap of 25 cm between two RRUs  Aerodynamic design  Bogies mounted with air brakes (BMBS) for effective braking  RRU equipped with pneumatic air suspension & ABS 8

  19. RoadRailer “V1” Specifications Tandem (Double) Axle Covered body Semi Trailer. Net Tare Weight: 9.94 MT; Gross Weight: 33.6 MT Length (ft) 40’ Width (ft) 8’ Height (ft) 8’ 6’’ Cargo Weight (MT) 23.66 Cargo Volume (CBM) 67.7 9

  20. RoadRailer “V1” Specifications At Rail Mode for Train Formation RoadRailer Units per Train : 50 Units RoadRailer Bogies per Train : 51 Bogies (49 MAB & 2 EAB) Maximum operating speed : 100 Kmph. RoadRailer Rake Length : 632.5 Mtrs. 10

  21. RoadRailer Benefits a. Technological benefits: Bi-modal feature provides seamless door-to-door service complementing 1. road & rail mode of transport Slack-less coupling in rail mode provides jerk-free movement 2. Marginal gap of 25 cm between two RoadRailer Units (RRUs) makes the 3. transportation safe and secure Aerodynamic design consumes – 25% less fuel in rail mode 4. Air suspension enhances the riding quality on road mode. 5. Elimination of multiple handling reduces damage and pilferage 6. 11

  22. RoadRailer Benefits b. Operational benefits:  TRAIN AT YOUR DOOR service.  Low cost terminals  Low tare weight  Quicker terminal turnaround.  Fixed day schedule service  High operating speed on rail  GPS for rail tracking first time in India 12

  23. Thank you
