ACIM - Advanced Catenary Installation Method - is the working system for stringing the conductors (ropes - wires) of an overhead contact line for electrification of railway infrastructure. This method allows to carry out simultaneously and in the shorter time possible all the working phases. It is used both for the electrification of "new railway lines“ and for the "renewal of the catenary". The Advanced Catenary Installation Method has been used with success for over 25 years in Europe. During this period the equipment have been designed and manufactured to develop and improve this method, each

The complete system is composed by:
Stringing Wagon. Tesmec Traction Unit can operate at constant speed controlled by a PLC system. This provides the best working condition to the Constant Tension Stringing Wagon and to the

string with constant tension simultaneously all the cables of the lines at the same time. The conductors should be strung according to the mechanical tensions indicated by the manufacturers and with the maximum accuracy. The stringing system shall guarantee the same individual stringing force applied to the conductors from the beginning to the end of the operations without stressing the conductors. Tesmec Constant Tension Stringing Wagon assures the highest tension accuracy even in case of variation of towing direction, speed, air temperature and slope; world-class in case

Self propelled wagon with MAT and platform (advanced machine for cable positioning): it is a specifically designed self propelled truck, that working in combination with the Stringing Wagon, allows the stringing of the catenary on the cantilevers placed on the poles. It has the function to easy positioning of the cable to the posts. Tesmec unit can perform these operations easily due a flexible working platform and high performing MAT system. F. “Catenary stringing" consists in a series of operations carried out in sequence, to install the contact line ready to operate. We take into consideration only the technical
and foundations); from the poles installation to the catenary final test. The operations can be grouped into 5 different phases which are listed below:
9/20 Tesmec Presentation-RE-SY-ACIM-EN-Rev 02 12/10/2010
1st PHASE - POLES INSTALLATION 2nd PHASE - CANTILEVERS INSTALLATION ON POLES
3rd PHASE - CABLE(S) STRINGING
4th PHASE - DROPPERS INSTALLATION 5th PHASE - CATENARY FINAL TEST
10/20 Tesmec Presentation-RE-SY-ACIM-EN-Rev 02 12/10/2010
The 1st phase consists in poles installation on basements previously built. It is carried out by a traction unit (self propelled rail truck - A) equipped with hydraulic crane for the poles handling which are transported on a suitable flat wagon (B).
11/20 Tesmec Presentation-RE-SY-ACIM-EN-Rev 02 12/10/2010
The 2nd phase consists in the cantilevers installation on poles. A self propelled wagon with platform (C), equipped with hydraulic crane is normally used to carry out this operation. A suitable flat wagon (B) is used to transport the pole cantilevers. These are fixed to the poles by the crane directly operated from the working platform. The self propelled wagon with hydraulic platform works also as traction truck of the flat wagon which transports the pole cantilevers.

The 3rd phase consists in the cable(s) stringing, messenger wires - contact wires. The constant tension stringing system guarantee the installation of the conductors at the final
installation) in shorter time because the conductors are already properly positioned on their
the same time. This phase is performed by a traction unit (self propelled rail truck, A), a constant tension stringing wagon (D) and a self propelled wagon with MAT and hydraulic platform (E).
13/20 Tesmec Presentation-RE-SY-ACIM-EN-Rev 02 12/10/2010
The 4th phase consists in installation of vertical wires called droppers. They connect the contact wire to the messenger wire and the job is completed. This phase starts after the self propelled wagon with MAT and platform fixes the messenger wire to the pole cantilevers. This is possible because the conductors are tensioned at the final operating tension. The messenger wire on the pole cantilevers will not vary its position as well the pole cantilevers will be kept orthogonal to the
carry at least two operators and a certain number of droppers. Normally more than one self propelled wagon are required.
14/20 Tesmec Presentation-RE-SY-ACIM-EN-Rev 02 12/10/2010
The 5th phase consists in the catenary final test, in order to check the right position of the contact wire (height and wires off-set) and eventually carry out the necessary adjustments. A dedicated machine called “multipurpose self propelled wagon" (F) is used to carry out this
move away the catenary from the pole cantilevers and allow the adjustment of the position, line pantograph to perform electrical and dynamic final tests and to draw up documents showing the correct position of the contact wire, for own use as well as for client use.

The aims of the “ACIM” is the construction of the Electrified Catenary for Railway Lines with the most accurate tension in the shorter time possible.
This system is in continuous development. Actually the construction of high speed train increase again the tension accuracy requirement for contact and messenger wires. It is essential that the tension applied on them is constant all times during the stringing
meters).
With the latest Equipment designed by Tesmec and its partners and a well trained working team it possible today to complete a line section of 1400-1600 meters in less than two hours. Anyone in Railways construction knows how the time factor is important for a new line and crucial in case of maintenance of existing line.
17/20 Tesmec Presentation-RE-SY-ACIM-EN-Rev 02 12/10/2010
In particular, the advantages of the ACIM are due to the specific characteristics of:
It is a railway engine expressly designed for this operation. It has a relevant traction force, suitable for towing the constant tension stringing wagon with the wires tensioned, at a very low speed and with a system which allows the variation of the translation speed in a soft way, according to different working requirements, without having to stop during the stringing
translation speed.

It is provided with the equipment for the constant tension stringing of the catenary conductors (wires and ropes), either simultaneously and individually, at the final operating
reliability and low maintenance costs and offer the following main features and advantages:
tension forces on the cables with high accuracy for both contact and messenger wires without causing any cable rotation or twisting.
droppers at the same time in the same working section with considerable time saving
the profile of the line or due to speed changes while stringing.
from a central control console.

If we could measure the mechanical tension on the conductors when the constant tension stringing wagon starts moving (instantaneous phase), we could see the physical phenomenon which leads to an instantaneous increase of the mechanical tension on the conductors. Then,
It is extremely important because it allows the installation of the conductors to the pole cantilevers without stopping the traction unit and the constant tension stringing wagon and the coming out of the conductors tensioned at the final operating tension from the capstan tensioner. In fact, different stops and restarts of the constant tension stringing system cause different mechanical tensions on the conductors when the constant tension stringing wagon moves on again, following the physic principle which says that the static friction is two times the kinetic one.

In conclusion, ACIM (constant tension without stops), is the best system available for the catenary stringing, without stressing the conductors (stops and restarts) and with relevant advantages in terms of accuracy, performance and timing saving. The Tesmec System is the result of three important factors:
Stringing Machines and Stringing Operation Procedures
construction of Railway Ancillary Equipment
Bureaux as well construction companies.
