Future growth
We’re investing in the town centre to make Barnsley a better place to live, work, invest and visit, but we need to make sure traffic can move freely so people can get in and out easily. Without highways improvements, the future growth aspirations of the borough will be unable to be accommodated.

Highway solutions considered
- Initial options assessed
- Option A – roundabout between Broadway and Horizon, diverted
Pogmoor Road (16 variants) – Option B – existing crossroads with left turn slip roads (four variants) – Option C – roundabout with Horizon, diverted Pogmoor Road (eight variants) – Option D – roundabout to replace the existing crossroads – Option E – gyratory with a diverted Pogmoor Road – Option F – Left turn flare from Dodworth Road (west) into Pogmoor Road (previously approved scheme) – Option H - Dualling of Dodworth Road
- Multiple variants were also tested to assess the impact of amending

Stage two considerations
Option Version Taken forward to stage two A 16 Broadway, Pogmoor Road and Horizon as separate signalised T junctions. B none Capacity improvements not considered to outweigh unacceptable impacts on pedestrian safety and land take costs. C 3 Dodworth Road / Broadway as a signalised T junction and Horizon / Pogmoor as a signalised roundabout. 6 / 7 Dodworth Road / Broadway as a signalised T junction and Horizon / Pogmoor as a signalised crossroads (V6 and V7 hav different pedestrian facilities). D none Priority controlled roundabout does not provide appropriate level of pedestrian crossing provision, particularly given proximity of college. E none Likely operational issues (e.g. exit blocking from internal links / downstream merge) and insufficient pedestrian crossing provision, particularly given proximity of college. F Option taken forward to VISSIM to allow other schemes to be benchmarked against previous preferred option, however LinSig modelling indicated it was unlikely scheme would provide sufficient capacity.
