Ground Grid and PMTs

11

Wavelength-shifter on 30 PMTs was changed from evaporated TPB to PEN sheets. 6 PMTs were left with TPB. The operation took place in situ. Installation of the ground grid followed (11th and 12th of June). Ground grid composed of 4 3x3 m2 pieces above the PMTs and a frema along the periphery (last thing to be installed) Intense cleaning campaign of the accessible components of the detector and the walls and roof of the cryostat from the end of May till the closure of the man hole

Cryostat commissioning

Formal CERN approval to start the cryogenic operation after passing a series of tests:

  • Helium leak tests of all the penetrations, flanges, and

feedthroughs.

  • Helium leak check of the TCO weldings (the rest of the

weldings were tested at the completion of the cryostat).

  • Vacuum test of the TCO secondary barrier (the rest of the

secondary barrier tested during the cryostat construction)

  • Global vacuum test of the insulation space
  • 200 mbar overpressure test monitored with position and strain

gauges (comparison with the deformation model ongoing)

  • Determination of the natural frequency of the cryostat with a

vibrational measurement (seismic, not needed for approval)

Cryogenic operation

16

From the 14th of June the cryostat is being purged with pure and warm gas argon. In few days the O2 content was brought down to 2 ppm with the argon piston effect. Since then the argon is purified (oxygen and water) in closed loop. Water content is at the level of 350 ppm (expected to be larger than NP04). Installation of cryogenic moisture traps that are functional since today. If the water contamination is too large there is the risk of ice formation on cold surfaces while cooling down

Installation:

  • Completion of the slow control cabling on the NP02 roof.
  • Installation o the motorisation system of the CRPs.
  • Installation of the PMT light calibration system.
  • Installation of the PMT power and readout racks.
  • Installation of 4 warm flanges on the SGFT and final connection of the electronics.
  • Cabling of the LEM HV.

Tests:

  • Alignment and motion tests of the CRPs.
  • External noise reduction campaign.
  • Ongoing tests in gas of the PMTs.
  • Tests of the LEM HV and HV connectivity.
  • Cathode HV test.

Next steps

Cooling with sprayers starting from Monday 1st of July (if water content diminishes). First 3 trucks (3x 20 ton) expected on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of July. From the 8th of July 2x 20 ton/day during week days for abut 5 weeks. If no regeneration of the purification cartridge is needed during filling, cryostat will be full at the beginning of August. From NP04 experience: cryogenic instrumentation will be fundamental during filling.
