I have been studying TPC pedestals and noise Current reco
- Pedestal evaluated for each events using pedestal fitter
- Removes sticky code and fits Gaussian for each channel
– Mean is the pedestal; sigma is the noise
- Followed by SC mitigation, tail removal, correlated noise removal
Natural to look at noise in two time domains
- Fast noise: T < 3 ms
- RMS of ADC minus pedestal or sigma of pedestal fit
- Studied here
- Slow noise: T > 3 ms
- RMS of pedestal – mean over 1000 events
- Shown in earlier talk
Time evolution
- Many runs shown in previous talks
- Have settled as run 5726 as “typical” for beam period
- This is a cosmic run. Better for studying noise.

Fast noise options
Some options for evaluation fast noise (plots shown for all)
- Sigma of pedestal fit (shown in previous talk)
- RMS of ADC – pedestal
- Large due to signal (cosmics, …), sticky codes (SC), tails from AC coupling
- RMS in not-signal regions
- Run signal finder and evaluate RMS using non-signal samples
- Finder: threshold 30 ADC counts plus window (-10, 20) samples
- SC mitigated: run SC mitigation before signal finding
- Tail removed: also run exponential tail removal before signal finding
- After correlated noise removal (new!)
- Using both new and old signal finders
Here we look at two not-signal RMS options
- Tail removal (including SC mitigation)
- After correlated noise removal with internal signal finding (IROI)

Coherent noise
Evaluate coherent noise with contiguous samples
- Start sum over samples until 50 are found and add entry
- If signal is encountered, restart sum

New RMS calculation
Previous RMS was an average of RMS over events Now averaging squares for each event
- So result is the same as calculating RMS over all samples in all events
- Effect is to (properly) give higher weight to large fluctuations

Charge scale
ADC scale
- Results here are all at ADC scale
- No charge calibration applied
Area scale
- A charge calibration at area scale has been done
- Used in default reco
- But global rescale applied at end of dataprep for “2D deconvolution”
- Typical protoDUNE scale is about 25 e/ADC count
- è Noise level of 4 ADC counts is 100 e
- Tick sum of charge in a collection pulse gives the collected charge
Height scale
- Alternative calibration at height scale is possible
- Height of fast pulse then gives the collected charge
- Fast means charge collected in much less than one tick (500 ns)
- This is the electron equivalent traditionally shown in noise plots
- Multiply area scale by 5.58 to convert
- 4 ADC count è 560 e
