Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN)

Work under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Physician performing duties such as basic nursing care, monitoring patient status, administering medications, initiating and maintaining IV fluids, wound care, and communicating with the healthcare team. Must attend a nursing school approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing Must complete the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) Receive an Ohio Licensure that includes Medication and IV certifications The Ohio licensure can transfer to any other state if a nurse moves or wishes to work in more than

Graduates from our program

Many of our graduates are hired by the clinical sites Most have chosen a job before they graduate Job opportunities in long-term care, hospitals, urgent care centers, doctor’s offices, schools, correctional facilities, home care, rehabilitation units, memory care, OB, Pediatrics…… Wages for new graduates are between $18 - $24/hour, with a median salary of $43,430 - Ohio DJFS Job Outlook 2026 for healthcare projections Benefits Tuition assistance or reimbursement to return to school for the RN program – historically 65-70% of PN graduates return to school within 5 years.

Program Overview

Full-time program

  • 1. Full-time can be completed in 2 semesters for a total of 36 credit hours
  • 2. New class beginning each August and each January
  • 3. Hours: M-F within the hours of 7:30am – 4:30pm
  • 4. Classroom and Practice Lab – completed at the Akron campus
  • 5. Clinical experiences – completed at healthcare facilities within a 75-mile radius of the school

Part-time evening/weekend program

  • 1. Part-time program can be completed in 4 semesters for a total of 36 credit hours
  • 2. New class began in January 2020 – next start date to be announced
  • 3. Hours: Classroom/Practice Lab – 1 to 2 evenings a week from 4:00pm – 9:30pm

Clinical experiences – Saturdays from 8:00am – 2:30pm

  • 4. Classroom and Practice Lab – completed at the Akron campus
  • 5. Clinical experiences – completed at healthcare facilities within a 75-mile radius of the school

TEAS score of 58.7 or better – for more information, go to: https://www.atitesting.com/teas-prep

At this time we are unable to offer the TEAS test on campus. We are unaware of any other locations that are offering the test. We will update this if we receive more information. If you have completed the PN application and the background check, please email the application and the SSC Security email to bdawson@starkstate.edu. Your file can be updated once the TEAS test is available.

PN Admission Requirements

Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology – BIO101 as pre-req or co-req

We strongly encourage you take this course prior to beginning the PN courses. If you are currently enrolled or taking the course during the Summer session, mark “In progress” on your application. If you choose to take this course in conjunction with the PN courses, you must complete the course during the first semester of the PN program.

Student Success Seminar – SSC101 as pre-req or co-req

We encourage you to take this course prior to beginning the PN courses. If you are currently enrolled or taking the course during the Summer session, mark “In progress” on your application. If you choose to take this course in conjunction with the PN courses, you must complete the course during the first semester of the PN program. If you choose to take these courses in conjunction with the PN courses, you must complete both courses during the first semester of the PN program – requiring you to take 19 credit hours.

Application Deadlines

Applicant must submit the following three (3) documents prior to the deadlines:

  • 1. PN Application
  • 2. Background check email from SSC Security
  • 3. TEAS scores – due to the unavailability of this test, you may submit the other 2 documents when

complete and submit the TEAS scores once you have successfully completed the test. Submit documents by email to bdawson@starkstate.edu Deadline for the Fall 2020 start will be June 15, 2020 Deadline for the Spring 2021 start will be November 15, 2020

What to expect after your application is submitted?

Admission Committee will review all applications – Admission Committee will not make any decisions on admission until they have received all 3 required documents. A maximum of 46 students will be chosen for each class (Fall 2020 cohort; Spring 2021 cohort) Admission Committee will notify applicants of admission or denial by email within 2 weeks following the deadlines. Students that have received acceptance emails will be instructed on further requirements to be completed such as health physical, drug screen, immunizations, uniforms, CPR, and books – as well as the date and time of a MANDATORY orientation meeting.
