Mental Health Nursing Practice at Sunderland
- The BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing Practice Course has been developed in
partnership with two local NHS Mental Health and Learning Disability Trusts
– This creates a wide variety of placement opportunities and clinical experiences
- The Mental Health work closely with the Adult Nursing Course and we also have
– access to superb facilities; our Living Lab supports interactive simulation for the development of tomorrow’s nurses – a unique relationship with our Patient, Carer and Public Involvement Group who take part in a variety of activities to support learning – Students on our course will be guaranteed an interview for a Staff Nurse post with a local Trust following successful completion of the course

Learning Disability Nursing Practice at Sunderland
- The BSc (Hons) Learning Disability Nursing Practice Course has been developed in partnership
with our two local NHS Mental Health and Learning Disability Trusts that will enable students to access and experience a variety of clinical placements during their 3 year study. This will also promote job opportunities when students have successfully completed the course.
- The Module Leaders are experienced Learning Disability Nurses, who will provide you with
the knowledge and skills required of a Registered Nurse in Learning Disabilities. We have the added support of our health academics to provide specific teaching in required specialist fields.
- As with our other branches of nursing practice, we have a unique relationship with our
Patient, Carer and Public Involvement Group who take part in a variety of activities to enable safe and realistic learning opportunities to students
- On successful completion of the course, Learning disability students will also have a
guaranteed interview for a staff nurse with a local Trust.

Adult Placements
During your 3 year programme you will complete a variety of clinical placements including: Ward based: medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, care of the older person, rehabilitation, mental health Community: district nursing, health visiting, community matrons, mental health Critical Care: intensive care, theatres, accident and emergency, coronary care Specialist teams: tissue viability, diabetes, respiratory, pain control, critical care outreach, stroke
Mental Health Placements
- During your 3 year programme you will complete a variety
- f clinical placements some of them may include:
- Ward based: Acute admissions, Psychiatric Intensive Care
Units (PICU), Rehabilitation services, Older peoples services, Children's services and Forensic Mental Health
- Community: Community mental health teams including
adult and older peoples. Early Intervention into psychosis teams, psychiatric liaison teams
- Specialist teams: Offender Health teams including prison
in-reach, street triage or court liaison. Crisis intervention teams, assertive outreach and early onset teams
Learning Disability Placements
- During your 3 year programme you will experience a variety
- f clinical placements, examples of which are;
- Ward-based: acute admission and treatment wards,
Forensic services, Rehabilitation wards.
- Community: Health Promotion Teams, GP practices, private
and social care services, Learning Disability Community Treatment Teams, Health Facilitation Teams, respite services, schools, Transition teams.
- Specialist teams: Autism services, Prisons, Positive
Behaviour Support teams, specific Mental Health teams.
