Social Work England is a specialist body taking a new approach to regulating social workers in their vital roles. We believe in the power of collaboration and share a common goal with those we regulate – to protect the public, enable positive change and ultimately improve people’s lives

We…..

  • Set professional standards for social workers in England, including continuous professional

development standards.

  • Will hold the register for circa 96,000 social workers.
  • Set initial education and training standards and approve qualifying courses.
  • Evaluate social workers’ continuing professional development.
  • Approve post qualifying courses for persons who are, or wish to become, approved to act as approved

mental health professionals and courses for persons who are, or wish to become, approved to act as best interest assessors.

  • Handle concerns raised to us about a social worker and assess whether a social worker’s practice has

fallen short of the professional standards.

AMHP/BIA

Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP)

  • The AMHP standards will remain the same as HCPC at go live.
  • We will be reviewing these standards from Spring next year with a view to publishing our own AMHP

standards in Autumn 2020. As part of this review we will be consulting with the sector and our key stakeholders. Best Interest Assessors (BIA)

  • No existing standards to approve courses against
  • Existing course providers can continue to offer the BIA course.
  • We will be waiting for the accompanying regulations, framework and a Code of Practice for the

Approved Mental Capacity Professional (AMCP) role before considering this area further.

Fitness to practise

  • The fitness to practise rules set out what will happen when someone raises a concern about a social
  • worker. We have held a consultation for our guidance behind the rules.
  • Following extensive consultation with the sector, we have developed an approach that aligns good

regulatory practice with good social work practice. That means:

  • Robust triage of concerns.
  • Social work expertise at all major decision points in the process.
  • We will stay in touch with you if a concern is raised about you.
  • More options to conclude cases without a hearing.
  • Support for complainants, witnesses and social workers involved in the process.
  • Regular conversations on what we are learning.
