13 February 2018 Kathryn Dionne Local Office Landscape and Urban Design 61 9th Street, suite C3 Brooklyn, NY 11215 BY EMAIL: kathryn@localofficelandscape.com Dear Kathryn: This letter comes to report on the trees adjoining the Port Richmond branch of the New York Public Library, at 75 Bennett Street in Staten Island. You asked us to report on seven trees, the five that are in the lawns in front of the library and the two that are planted in street tree pits along Heberton Avenue. Each tree has been given a unique number which can be seen on the attached Numbered
The three trees on the west side of the entry – Trees 1, 2 and 3 – are all pin oaks. They are all in moderately good condition. With proper protection, they should be able to remain
The two trees on the east of the entry – Trees 4 and 5 – are both Norway maples. Both of these trees have serious issues. Both have stem girdling roots, which damage the circulation system that brings water and nutrients to the leaves. Both also have very poor crown structure. The leaders are all codominant stems with included bark. This structural flaw may well result in premature loss of one or more of the leaders. Furthermore, at least
wind event. In addition, both trees are somewhat thinner than they should be in twigs and crowns branchlets. This suggests that both trees have low vitality. The two street trees -- Trees 6 and 7 – are in good street tree pits, but both are planted directly under utility wires. Tree 6 is a large pin oak. In order to preserve the utility wires, it has been necessary to top this tree. The upper part of the remaining crown appears to be in only fair condition, and there may be hollows inside it. The lateral branches, however, appear to be in moderately good health. Because the tree pit is roughly 6x18 feet in size, the roots have a fairly good area from which to draw water and nutrients. Tree 7 is a very nice young cherry. It suffered a long basal wound at one point, but this wound has now entirely occluded. The tree is fully budded and looks like it will flower
maturing tree, it will likely be possible to prune the tree without causing it serious
In summary, Trees 1-3 are very good pin oaks, in young maturity. Trees 4 and 5 are poor examples of a low-value species. Tree 6 is a good tree, but planted in the wrong place. Tree 7 is a good young cherry. Please feel free to call with questions and comments. My cell is 917-567-7215. Sincerely, Urban Arborists, Inc. by:______________ Bill Logan - President
