The U.S. bishops committed “the pastoral resources of the Church” to “the specific needs of … those who have had or have taken part in an abortion” (no. 6).

Project Rachel, the Catholic Church’s ministry to those who have been involved in abortion, is a diocesan-based network of specially trained priests, religious, counselors, and laypersons who provide a team response of care for those suffering in the aftermath of abortion. In addition to referring for Sacramental Reconciliation, the ministry provides an integrated network of services, including pastoral counseling, spiritual direction, support groups, retreats and referrals to licensed mental health professionals.

“Do I feel sadness? Yes. Do I miss my child Mary Elizabeth? Yes. But do I live my life in shame, sorry, and guilt? Absolutely not. I am at peace, I am happy and thanks to God, I have a wonderful life.”
