What is Plateformes en communs?

  • A project by French association La Coop des Communs

(http://coopdescommuns.org/) mixing SSE, commons and innovation

  • Since 2017
  • A collective of fair/open digital platforms
  • A group of persons (project leaders, experts, activists)
  • A learning community: horizontal action research
  • A commons²: an innovative ecosystem at the service of innovative

ecosystems

Philosophy of the project

The project will depend

  • n everyone

What we jointly chose to do

Building a model of contribution

Objectives of the project:

Building an ecosystem of platforms Creating commons and inter-cooperations so that collective success allows individual success Enabling the emergence of new projects Experimenting and documenting innovative practices

1/ 1/ Inc Inclus lusiv ive e go governance

  • The platforms must be organisations or collectives democratically

run by their users.

  • They determine the nature of their stakeholders (users, workers,
  • wners, public authorities…) as well as their respective status and

roles concerning the governance.

  • They seek inclusive practices as regards their stakeholders,

especially for their users and employees.

  • They seek as much as possible to implement horizontal, collective

and transparent decision-making processes.

slide-10
SLIDE 10

2/ 2/ Fa Fair dis distr tributio ibution n of value lue

  • Platforms may be for-profit, non-profit or limited-profit
  • rganisations but they necessarily ensure the fair distribution of

the value between all of their contributors.

  • A part of the generated value is used to sustain the commons of

the platform.

  • The users and contributors of the platform are entitled to take

part in the platform’s capital.

  • Platforms commit to protecting their users and ensuring a fair

remuneration of their contributors.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

3/ 3/ Da Data et ethics

  • Platforms are transparent on the use of personal data. They explicitly

seek the free and informed consent of their users and warn them about the goals of its usage.

  • Platforms are transparent regarding the use of personal data in their

(dynamic) pricing model

  • Users’ collective data is secured. Its storage conditions and location are

mentioned to them.

  • Platforms display the conditions in which they collect, rate, share and

transfer personal data.

  • Platforms ensure the easy understanding by their users of all contracts

and terms & conditions. They abstain from unilaterally amending contracts and clearly inform their users on such issues.

4/ 4/ Common Commons prod

  • duction
  • n
  • The platforms build commons at the service of their stakeholders

(users, employees…)

  • They also share some of their resources with the whole

community.

  • The commons and collective creations realized on the platforms

are placed under open or reciprocity licenses.

slide-13
SLIDE 13

5/ 5/ Coop Cooperation

  • n be

betw tween een me memb mbers

  • The platforms share best practices and tools in order to strengthen

their mutual development and enable the emergence of new projects.

  • The platforms co-create a « commons of commons » by sharing with

the others some features of their activities (legal status, software, informations on their business model…), with different degrees of

  • penness, transparency and sharing, in order to expand these

resources to the whole community

What we have done:

  • Big conference in Paris (5th December 2017) : more than 100 people
  • Inter-platform meetings
  • Presentations: Data Food Consortium, Coopventure fund, Fabrique

des mobilités…

  • Collective case studies of platforms (presentations, surveys) on

various topics (economic models, governance…)

  • Collective reflection on open/reciprocity licenses and

experimentation of our self-made Coopyright license

  • Collective reflection on reciprocity in the commons and (non-)

measurement of individual contribution

  • Permanent watch on events, call for projects…
slide-17
SLIDE 17

What we plan to do:

  • Collective reflection on:
  • Fair and sustainable pricing models
  • Commons accounting/valuation (open intangible assets…)
  • Valuation and measure of platforms’ social impact
  • Experimentation of data pooling between platforms
  • Interoperability between platforms (sectorial and/or meta)
  • Brand/label to promote fair platforms and create network effects
  • Elaboration of legal status (or status kits) in line with practices of open

governance
