There are 8 sliders controlling the design parameters Seat length, width, seat support length, width, and base length and width each control the size of their respective ellipses. Pipe Diameter controls the diameter in the pipe function. Number of pipes controls how many times the ellipses are divided. Definition for seating surface, seat support, bench support. Integers were used to se the XYZ coordinates of each point. Each point is then used to set the center point of each ellipse. Definition for seat back and inner structural support The seat back and inner structural support ellipses have a fixed ratio by subtracting a set integer value from driving ellipses.

Lofts between ellipses to create sitting surface and sides. Lofts were created and then baked to achieve higher resolution than the preview. Each ellipse was divided into a specified number of points set by a slider. The line function was used to draw vertical lines from each point connecting two ellipses together at a time. The pipe function was used to revolve pipes around each line. A slider is used to set the diameter of the piping.

Construction

The frame of this bench would be constructed out of powder coated tube steel or aluminum. There are two variations of this bench. The first variation utilized a tough weather resistant composite material to make up the seating surface and side panels. These panels are cut to size and then bolted to the frame. The second variation does not use composite panels but instead uses many more vertical tubular members spaced close together making up the seating surface and sides.

Purpose

This would be considered an all purpose bench, it can encourage conversation and relaxation because of the seat back and open design. The center of the bench remains open so it is possible to grow plants or a tree through the center void.
