The Head of State’s response, is typically eloquent, firstly acknowledging the example set by Māori. He likens the importance of knowing your language to the oli , a near-extinct native flower that is currently being revitalised in Samoa (In olden times, its scent used in marriage and said to make a house smell nice during the old days when there was no funeral morgue available.) He states that it is not just about restoring, it’s about intelligence of the mind, the soul and people. Language is an express of that intelligence.
