  • Tu. Listen, Lord and answer me.

Wed Lord, forgive the wrong I have done.

  • Th. Lord, you are exalted over all.

Fr. Blessed be God my salvation! S. Lord, teach me your decrees. This feast originated in Jerusalem in the late fourth

  • century. It was introduced at Rome

during the seventh century under its Eastern title of Hypapante or the Meeting

  • f Jesus and Simeon. In the medieval

Western Church the feast became known as the Purification of Mary, but the 1960 revision of the Roman Calendar returned to the older tradition which celebrated this day as a Feast of the Lord. The ancient title of Meeting well expresses the meaning of this feast. Forty days after his birth, the Lord Jesus meets and is presented to the God of his ancestors in the temple. He meets Simeon and Anna, symbols of the believing people, witnesses and troubadours of this manifestation. As at his birth, a striking contrast is made between the unassuming behavior of Jesus’ parents and the glory of the event as it is perceived by other witnesses. Response in faith to God’s revelation in Christ is not confined to his relatives (see Luke 11:27-28). Throughout Israel’s history, God has shone forth upon his people in dazzling appearances of light: the luminous cloud in the temple of Solomon (1 Kings 8:10), the glory seen by Isaiah (Isa 6:1), the refiner’s fire coming to purify the sons of Levi (Mal 3:2-3). In Christ, the light which will enlighten the Gentiles now floods the world. In Simeon, the old age of the world welcomes in its arms the eternal youth of God. But already the shadow of the cross falls across the scene, for the darkness will refuse the light. Israel’s story could be told in terms of a series of meetings between God and his people which both reveal and veil. Abraham received three strangers into his tent (Genesis 18); during the Exodus, Israel encountered its God in the tent of meeting (Exod 33:7-11); the bride of the Canticle longed to meet her beloved in order to clasp him to her heart (Cant 3:4). It is not enough to greet the guest with the cry, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Matt 21:9). Like Abraham, we must prepare space for the guest in the tent of our

  • hearts. “Prepare to meet your God, O Israel” (Amos

OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION ‘OPEN HOUSE’ 2014 We will be having an Open House for all parents, grandparents, prospective parents and our parishioners this Wednesday, February 5th, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. The reason for this 'morning' is to promote the fantastic learning that happens in our classrooms and to show our community what we do each day. This ‘Open School Morning’ affords our present parents an opportunity to see grades higher than their child’s present class and gives prospective parents a chance to tour our school and visit classrooms while classes are in session. NB: Please note that there will be no 4:00-4:30pm Confessions on Saturday, Feb 8th. ADORERS: Adoration is 9 am-5 pm on Monday to Friday in our Adoration Chapel. As this is a ‘quiet space’, the Rosary will be recited in the Church, and 1 or 2 adorers need to go to the Chapel right after Mass. Chapel Open: Please note that the adoration Chapel is open, and not alarmed, from Mon-Fri., 9am -5pm. However, during these times the main Church is not

  • pened and is alarmed. Thank you.

REMINDER: All requests of Priests are to be made by phone (not email) during office hours, Tues – Fri., from 9am-12pm & 1pm-4pm. Emergencies anytime.
