Call for white papers on LSST survey strategy

  • The call - https://ls.st/c66
  • White papers need method to evaluate survey strategy effectiveness for

specific science goal: metrics (MAF metrics)

  • For moving objects, this generally requires a step beyond simulating

survey strategy (Opsim output): need to simulate observations of a population of small bodies

  • Then can evaluate metrics, based on those observations
  • 2

SLIDE 3

OpSim, sims_movingObjects, & MAF

  • 3

Operations Simulation (OpSim) generates simulated pointing histories under realistic conditions. (Scheduler in OpSim will be the LSST scheduler). sims_movingObjects takes a set of

  • rbits and generates the observations

LSST would acquire MAF analyzes these observations and applies a “metric” to all observations of the same object. (MAF can clone obs/orbit over range of H values).

Example: Discovery / Completeness

Step 1 - opsim (survey strategy)

  • 4
  • A particular survey strategy results in a simulated pointing history

(generated with OpSim - LSST scheduler)

Sample subset of columns from Opsim output database

SLIDE 5

Example: Discovery / Completeness

Step 2 - generate moving object observations (sims_movingObjects)

  • 5
  • Given a set of orbital parameters, sims_movingObjects can generate
  • bservations of those objects

Sample subset of columns from sims_movingObjects output observation file

Step 3 - MAF metric

  • 6
  • MAF metric evaluates chance of discovery (per orbit, assuming a particular

H value — or range of H values).

  • MAF metric only has to deal with evaluating X after being handed the
  • bservations for a given orbit, at a given H value
  • Metric output is saved; can then be summarized and visualized across

different axes

  • Discovery chance as a function of orbital parameters (at a given H value)
  • Discovery chance as a function of H value (taking median/mean/etc

across orbital parameters of the population)

  • For something like discovery: also can summarize as completeness

across population as a function of H

White Paper Runs

Name Description

baseline2018a

Baseline Project-official baseline (official opsim v4 baseline, 6/2018). No dome crawl.

kraken_2026

Next baseline Unofficial baseline (expected next baseline, including dome crawl). Comparison point for WP run simulations.

colossus_2665

Bigger baseline Baseline style, with slightly expanded WFD footprint to better satisfy SRD constraints on fO

colossus_2664

No GP No separated Galactic Plane proposal. Simply run WFD over galactic plane region.

colossus_2667

Single visits Survey with single visits only. Standard visits in pairs each night replaced with single visits per night.

pontus_2489

Short visits Survey with more visits. Standard 2x15s visits replaced with 1x20s in grizy and 1x40s in u band.

kraken_2042

No snaps Survey without snaps (single 30s exposures per visit).

kraken_2035

9 DDF Survey with 9 DD mini surveys instead of 5. Addition of 4 extra extragalactic DD fields.

mothra_2045

Rolling (2) A rolling cadence in WFD. Two regions of declination, alternating on/off every other year throughout entire survey.

pontus_2502

Rolling (2) A rolling cadence in WFD. Two regions of declination, alternating on/off every other year throughout the entire survey, but the background WFD remains "on" at a 25% reward level.

kraken_2036

Rolling (3) A rolling cadence in WFD. Three regions of declination, alernating on/off every third year from years 3-8. Standard WFD coverage in years 1-2, 8-10 (first two and last two years).

pontus_2002

PS style Very large WFD footprint (24,700 sq deg) and 5 DD mini-surveys (5 fields). ("PS style").

kraken_2044

PS - Single visits Very large WFD footprint (24,700 sq deg) and 5 DD mini-surveys (5 fields) ["PS style"] but with single visits per night.

mothra_2049

PS - Rolling (2) A rolling cadence on a very large WFD footprint (24,700 sq deg). Two regions of declination, alternating on/off every other year throughout entire survey.

nexus_2097

PS - Rolling (3) A rolling cadence on a very large WFD footprint (24,700 sq deg). Three regions of declination, alternating on/off every third year from years 3-8. Full WFD coverage in years 1-2, 8-10 (first and last two years).

(what’s up with the single visits run? colossus_2667)

  • 13

Example: Discovery / Completeness

This is all due to field overlaps! Run was configured for single visits per night. Note that amount of overlap will depend on field tessellation and visit sequence.

Fewer chances for discovery, but still have capability NVisits per night, including overlaps NVisits per night, without overlaps

LSST Survey Strategy Survey Strategy must be defined with input from the community.

  • LSST Call for White Papers on Survey Strategy: http://ls.st/c66
  • 15

Survey strategy can be improved beyond current reference but there are open questions as to how. Snaps (2x15 or 1x30)? WFD cadence? NES footprint & cadence? Pairs in same or different filters? No pairs at all? New mini surveys for other purposes? WHITE PAPERS UNDERWAY Contact Meg / LSST-SSSC
