New Curriculum

 We have modified our curriculum to follow a thematic approach.  Students will engage in hands on approach, which simply means students will learn by doing and by example.  We will still be using some workbooks and worksheets in the class but this will mostly be used for assessment purposes.

 SCF is a frame work that we have introduced to our curriculum to enhance students’ 21st century learning skills.  The prime areas are Personal, Social, Emotional Communication, and Physical Development  These areas will assist children in developing self confidence, self awareness, managing feelings and behavior.

Integration

 A thematic teaching approach allows for integration across subjects.  Science, Math and English can be integrated into a lesson.  By using integration students are exposed to different learning styles and techniques.  This gives all children an opportunity to make connections between areas of learning and use these to deepen their understanding of the world.

Learning Centers

 This year we will focus on learning stations or centers.  The main centers in each class are Math, Science, and English Centers.  Students will be provided personalized support and challenge to enable them to make progress and allow them to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and skills.

Assessment Overview

 In KG, assessment is an on going and continuous process.  Teachers use rubrics, checklists, student work,

  • bservations, and class activities to assess and

evaluate a student’s progress and attainment.  These assessment tools are aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning.  There is no homework in KG but the teachers do email templates and suggested hands-on activities that can be practiced at home with the children to review what has been learnt at school. We also do encourage parents to read with or to their child every day.  Progress reports will be sent home twice a term; mid term and end of term.

Communication

 Please note there are a number of ways to communicate with your child’s teacher. Email Class Dojo Student Agenda (coming soon)  We ask that you allow teachers time to respond to your queries. Our teacher’s are hard at work teaching your child but will reply within 24 hours.  If you have a serious concern, we would suggest making an appointment to see your child’s teacher. This can be done via phone to the section supervisor

  • r via email directly to the class teacher.

Communication

 Teachers will upload the learning outcomes via Class Dojo weekly.  Teachers will also upload a detailed letter explaining what they have covered in class every two weeks.  At the end of every 2 weeks a file will be sent containing student work.  Please continue to check Class Dojo on a regular basis as this will be the teacher’s main source of communication about upcoming events and activities.
