Each mountain has a one-page checklist required to be completed before a patroller can patrol solo

A host patroller will always be assigned to a transitional patroller until training is complete

Each of us will be expected to work 6 duty days at the “other” mountain during this transitional year – even if the transitional checklist is completed in less time

Each weekend we will assign teams of two – one host & one transitional patroller

Mountain Supervisors will oversee this transitional training process

Can I opt to only work at my original mountain?

  • No. One patrol, one mountain w/ two main bumps

If it doesn’t work, will we go back to two patrols?

  • No. Every department at BBMR serves both mountains. NSP

& BBMR recognize this patrol as one patrol. It will work! Rumor that Room/Base Patrollers are going away? No chance! This is an integral part of our Patrol Can they patrol the mountain in their colors? Yes, with a current ski/snowboard certification

slide-10
SLIDE 10

What is the future of volunteers @ BBMR/Mammoth?

  • Bright. They respect our volunteer organization & we can

maintain that respect with a high-level of service. In fact, we will have a small crew patrolling at June Mtn this year Will they cut benefits again this year? Most patrollers don’t think they were cut last year – 4 mountain pass plus golf & mtn biking. We won’t go back to free lunches, but the overall benefit was better for “most” After this transitional year, will things go back to normal? Yes, but a “new normal” – today that’s not totally clear

slide-11
SLIDE 11

If we opt to go inactive or alumni this year, can we come back to patrol next year? NSP will welcome you back, but BBSP will review each case individually based on current staff needs – no guarantees Can we do a secondary with another patrol? We’ll review each request – must have 12 days at BBMR Will night shifts still operate the same at Snow Summit? Yes, for the most part. You can work a double shift and single shifts will start at 3pm

slide-12
SLIDE 12

When is opening day? Snow Summit is targeted for Nov 19, Bear for Nov 26. The first two weeks will have a very limited volunteer staff. How will we get our season pass? Dependent passes? Patrollers will take last year’s pass to Employee Serv @ SS and fill out a waiver – pass will be activated or reissued. Dependents: adults

What does the future hold for Big Bear Ski Patrol?

Raising the bar – raising the expectations

All staff capable of performing all duties

Alpine Patrollers – simple fitness requirement 2017

More selective candidate process

New Room/Base patrollers – strong medical background

New Hill Safety staff – only those w/ patroller potential

Promoting development – Senior/Certified training
