OFEE’S MISSION The mission of the Office of Family Engagement & Equity is rooted in the belief that family engagement is any way that an adult caregiver contributes to or supports a child's learning. We build partnerships between families, school staff, and community providers to promote successful outcomes for our students. We're here for you!

  5. FAMILY ENGAGEMENT RESEARCH “ Over 50 years of research links the various roles that families play in their child’s education … ” Dr. Karen Mapp, Harvard University Grad. School of Education • Exhibit faster rates of literacy acquisition Students • Earn higher grades and test scores • Enroll in higher level programs with • Are promoted more and earn more credits Engaged • Adapt better to school and attend more regularly • Have better social skills and behavior Families: • Graduate and go on to higher education • And more

  6. OFEE SUCCESSES • Addressed family needs & barriers. For example, at one school with 445 students, an advocate reports 146 or 33% of families were in contact with an OFEE advocate , supporting their children to attend more school and access classroom learning • Shifted mindsets at school sites. For example, conversations are more asset based, resulting in more productive and positive partnerships between families and schools in IEP, SARB, SART, SST, RTI, parent groups meetings and conversations, etc. • Educated and empowered parents. For example, 95% of the 87 Elementary McKinney Vento families are being supported by OFEE advocates to better navigate school systems and advocate for their children • Created transition plans to ensure continued student success, such as a warm hand off to middle school counselors • Offered district-wide programs. For example, Immigrant Forums, School Supply Giveaway and Family Picnic ( 1145 bags of supplies distributed), and the Black History Oratorical Fest

OFEE CHALLENGES • Unmet family needs remain at all of our schools: 0.5 FTE staff at elementary schools, 2.0 FTE staff at high school • No OFEE presence middle schools: families need continuity and support across K-12 • Opportunities for capacity building around family engagement : need to intentionally build school site and district capacity to effectively partner with families as a fundamental component of educating students
