TGM what we do/a reminder

  • The TGM is the impact initiative of the Isaac

Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI)

  • The Institute is the UK’s national institute for

mathematical sciences research programmes

  • Launched in March 2013 the TGM acts as a

knowledge intermediary for the mathematical sciences in the UK

  • Aims to extend the reach and highlight the

importance of mathematics to all potential users –

  • ther disciplines, researchers in business/industry,

public sector

  • User engagement – this is the basis of what we do,

it’s understanding our own community, as well as end-users in order to engage effectively

  • Communication, facilitating , translating to

maximise knowledge exchange

A Knowledge Intermediary for UK Mathematics

Isaac Newton Institute Research Programmes

  • Helping create impact for INI programmes - Open for Business events
  • The TGM is well placed as part of the INI, with access to world-leading academics
  • n Institute programmes and across the UK
  • Spinning out activity from programmes
  • Polynomial Optimisation - Optimisation for Space Engineering initiative (ESA,

Airbus, other UK universities)

  • Quantum Information programme - post-quantum computing/cryptography

(GCHQ, UK universities)

  • Data Linkage & Anonymisation – public understanding of privacy, data sharing

and governance

Delivery Partner

  • Working in partnership with many - industry, funders, Government, the KTN,

institutions, learned societies, networks

Types of Activities

A flexible and inclusive approach to enquires and ideas. These could include:

  • Need to address a specific technical issue or look for a better solution
  • Help with obtaining ideas for next generation solutions from mathematicians involved in frontier research
  • Development of networks, growing communities of contacts, stakeholder engagement and brokering

Gateway activities could take a number of forms and can be developed and delivered by the TGM as a main delivery partner, or in partnership with others:

  • Events – workshops and consultations
  • Training programmes
  • Programmes of work and national networks
  • Bespoke projects

UK Maths Community:

  • TGM is a key partner in the Industrial mathematics community
  • Key partner in the current Bond Review of Knowledge Exchange in the Mathematical Sciences – helping to

establish best practice in knowledge exchange, overcoming obstacles, barriers, etc
