Community Background

These are the most important things you need to understand about our community:

  • 1. Many adults see underage drinking as an inevitable rite of passage.
  • 2. Youth often perceive that more peers are using alcohol than the

Holmes County survey data indicates.

  • 3. Youth frequently have the misconception that alcohol is not a

serious health risk.

Priority Problem to Be Addressed

Spark Holmes County will address underage drinking.

We will address this substance because: Pride survey data from 2014 of East and West Holmes 7th, 9th, and 11th graders show that alcohol is the substance used most by this population.

  • 30-Day Alcohol Use:

7th grade: 7.8% 9th grade: 11.9% 11th grade: 16.8%

Priority Population

  • We will address underage drinking among 7th, 9th, and 11th-

grade students in the East and West Holmes school districts who range in age from 12 to 17 years old, are male and female, mostly white non-Hispanic, and live in rural, northern Appalachian Holmes County Ohio.

Priority Population

These are the most important things you need to understand about our priority population:

  • 1. Youth often believe that alcohol is not a serious health risk, is not a

drug, or not that dangerous when compared to other drugs.

  • 2. Young people also claim that they have easy access to alcohol.
  • 3. Youth believe that many of their peers are drinking.

Problem Statement

The 2014 Pride survey indicates that although most 7th, 9th, and 11th grade Holmes County youth do not drink alcohol, there is an increase of regular alcohol use from 7th to 11th grade.
