Mission … since mid 1800’s

 Determine positions and motions of celestial bodies, Earth’s motion/orientation and precise time.  Disseminate astrometry and timing data to U.S. Navy and the American Department of Defense for navigation, targeting, weapons guidance, and communications to other agencies and the public.  Conduct research to improve these services, using the USNO library.
